How does the lottery work?
Getting O'Reilly might be enough to prevent us from getting a top 3 pick

Either this is a move that signals the rebuild and we are ready to trade Iggy/Kipper to get our first rounder back or this comes back to bite us in the ass and we are deeper in the hole than before. I would say there are better players available in this years draft than ROR from what I've read but then again I'm no scout.

Man, he's lucky he's not russian otherwise he'd get ripped apart on this board.

I wonder how long the Av's will take to either match or not. Anyone think they will take the full week to do so?

I like the move, but the ramifications of the qualifying offer are the most under the radar part of this move.
O'Reilly is a very safe pick-up where at worst you're going to end up with a 40 point, elite defensive centre (with the upside being a Kesler or Bergeron Selke type). At $5m per that's not good value, but it's still productive (kind of like a less expensive J-Bouw)
The issue I see moving forward is the obvious collusion in the NHL regarding offer sheets and Feaster breaking that. He's already been rumored to not be the most "connected" GM and this certainly won't help. It certainly helps us on ice now and in the future, but it's going to be pretty difficult to get value in trades moving forwards I think.
It's probably worth the shot because as bad as I think this Flames team is, I think they fall outside of that top 4 in the draft where the talent level drops considerably.

Its actually better.
Exercising a draft pick is much like buying a derivative. But this wayt hey are trading an option for a proven commodity

This is a huge gamble for a potentially really short return. Since the balance of this season will burn off one year of the deal, that means we could potentially have him hold out on us after one season since he will be UFA again?

And this is why Colorado doesn't match:
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie If COL matches, it could end up paying ROR about $3M for balance of season and $6.5M in each of next three seasons before he becomes UFA.
Remember O'Reilly gets $2.5 million just to sign today.

I suspect if they're not signing him, they'll wait until 11:59 on day 7 to decline, just because.

This does not surprise me at all, I pointed out in the thread about what you would do as GM that ownership expects to win now and that is the job they hired Feaster to do.

Which is exactly why it is risky to give him that much money, not to mention the picks. Leading his team (a bad team) in points isn't that big of a deal. Look at some bad teams in the past 20 years and see who their leading scorers are.
There are a lot of question marks with O'Reilly.

Is he a locker room problem? Interfering parents?
Feaster could be on a lot of GMs black-lists now.

I love that Feaster had the cojones to pull this move and play the offer sheet card. I can't say that I'm in love with the offer itself.
I agree that O'Reilly is a quality 2nd line centre, and I'd love to have him on this team. But $6.5 mil seems like a significant investment for this kind of player. What happens after next season when he goes into free agency? I haven't seen a whole ton of examples of guys taking less money off their RFA deal. Do you resign him at 4 years, 6.5 or 7 million per? Yikes.
My opnion, for all that it's worth, would be to make this kind of offer sheet to Tuukka Rask at the end of the season if Boston doesn't sew him up, or spend it on a Perry or Getzlaf in free agency.

Meaning he can't be traded until after next years trade deadline. Then his qualifying offer will be 6.5 million to retain his RFA rights.
Quite frankly as someone who has not been one that thinks we should try and get O'Reilly this offer sheet is sheer brilliance on the part of Feaster. I really think the Avs won't match.
|
Not necessarily. The trade deadline is 40 days before the last day of the season. Normally that's in late February but in Olympic years it usually gets pushed into March.
