Looking at the Canucks prospects they don't have much help coming and like the Flames will lean on their vets too deep into their 30's. Most of the top teams have a good balance of veteran and young talent.

It's not really an apt comparison because despite missing the playoffs 3 years in a row the Flames aren't much worse of a team than they ever were and have really only dropped a few spots in the league standings to end up where they are now. From 04-12, Calgary finished in the following spot leaguewide:
12th, 7th, 13th, 14th, 10th, 16th, 17th, 17th
Their last 3 years are only a slight drop off from where they were 5 years ago. They were always a bubble team that had to fight to even make the playoffs which is why they only managed to get home ice advantage once in the last decade. Not really the best comparable for a team coming off two 1st place finishes. San Jose would be a better comparable for Vancouver.

Don't know if I agree with that. Garrison was brought in to be an offensive guy who was to replace Salo. He has 2 points in his last 5 but 4 on the season. Not sure it's time to declare his massive contract a solid move yet.

Judging from Poe's photo post that VAN team sure has some creepy practices.

I took the green man on the left over Kesler. Looks like it's paying off!

Erm, no. He was brought in to be a defensive defenseman who happens to have a big shot. In any event, he's covered for Salo pretty decently in terms of scoring - Salo was producing at about 8-9 goals a season. At this time, pro-rated over 82 games, Garrison would have 13. Which is fine. Not only was 16 goals last year an anomaly anyway, in Florida he was the first unit PP trigger-man, in Vancouver he's on the 2nd unit. He isn't going to score 15 goals.

I picked him up off waivers when I noticed he was about to get healthy. Been racking up stats at a reasonable pace. Now I'm kinda screwed.

Salo was basically a 25 point defenseman in his last few years and in the long term Garrison should match or exceed that while being 10 years younger.
I'd argue his lack of points (primarily his lack of assists) so far has as much to do with luck as anything else. He's been on the ice for 21 Canucks GF (2nd only to Edler among defensemen) but only has 4 points. That's not a ratio that is going to hold up long term and by all rights he should have picked up 3-4 more assists based on the number of goals they're producing while he's out there.

No he certainly was not, was brought in to play defensively which he has for the most part (and did in Florida for more than 1 year)

they were 8-2-2 without Kesler, they have depth, at worst they are finishing 3rd in the West
not really worried, if there was another good team in the division that could push for that and there was a risk of dropping to the 5-8 range Gillis might have to make a move, but not now

They were getting unreal play from their goaltenders during that run. Now both goalies seem to have come back down to Earth. They're also only 4 points up on Minnesota, and Minnesota has a game in hand.
The Canucks are going to need to step things up to hold onto the divisional lead.

They also got a run of games against an underwhelming division which inflated their record. If they don't pick up their play their position in the standings is far from secure.
On the bright side for the them, they always start poorly. Last season they were 10-9-1 after 20 and the year before they were 10-7-3. If they win their next game and get 26 points out of their first 20 games, that'd match their best start since 2003. They're generally a team that picks things up after the first 20 and they certainly have a lot of room left to improve even without Kesler (their defense in particular). Whether they actually do it is another matter.

4.6 a year for his "defensive game"? BS, he was brought in to contribute offensively and help with the powerplay.

his best quality was his defensive work, you may think it's BS but that doesn't make it wrong
