I'd take one for you, but my girlfriend is lying on it right now, stubbornly pretending that there's nothing wrong with it.
Meanwhile I'm sitting upwind on the other couch, watching her skin slowly turning grey.

I should have gone to see it myself before agreeing. You know how some people have a thing for stray animals, and always end up feeding them out the back door or adopting them? Well, my girlfriend is like that only with furniture - she just wants to save the things, no matter how shabby or unappealing they are.
Probably why she ended up with me really.

So, you smell of death as well?

Tell her that when you got home you confronted 3 thieves that were trying to steal the couch. Even though they obviously had martial arts training you were fighting them off valiantly but then you saw a small child wandering into the street. As you rushed to save the child from oncoming traffic the thieves put the couch in the back of their van and drove off. Just to make it believable smash a window and punch yourself in the face a few times.

Most smells are organic acids and baking soda is a powdered base. Voila! Stank gone. Plus after it's done you can build a paper mache volcano and put orange food colouring in some vinegar, add in the baking soda and voila! Your own working volcano to watch from you destanked couch

Is 1946 the year people who live together started to have discussions on furniture purchases that dictate the layout/usage of common areas? No? Then take your implied allegations of sexism and hit the road.

This thread has been awesome. Wonderful early morning reading at work.
The only concern I'd have about using a steam cleaner is ensuring that the couch dries fully. You don't want to get it too wet or else it'll just never dry - and that'll contribute to the already musty smell. Especially if you're in Vancouver where the RH is pretty high on the best of days. I'd personally start with the baking soda, liberally covered over the cushions, let it sit for a while, then vaccuum up.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I think I've found what I need: Rug Doctor. Although I'm tempted to just buy a wet/dry vac since they seem to retail at about $150.
Maybe what I'll do is take the cushion covers off and wet vac the death out of them, and try the baking soda method on the couch itself (I reckon the cushions are most likely to be problematic if they get wet).
Now I just need to look up some pagan chants or bible verses that I can recite while I sprinkle this thing with baking soda.

Don't forget to post a pic of the dirty water. That's the best part of carpet/upholstery cleaning. Don't leave us hanging.
