Isn't CPR to Ogden one of those rumours that circulates within the company every 5 years or so?

CPR has already moved some depts to Ogden. Facilities being one of them. They have moved into the locomotive shop now that Alstom has vacated. They can renovate and retrofit a few more areas but there is no way the entire company can uproot and find office space in that antiquated facility. They would have to start demolition of maybe the paint shop to create space and then build from scratch a new facility that could accommodate that many employees.

Rumors spreading around the office again that this is definitely going to happen around Q4 2013/Q1 2014. I am not too happy about this if true.

I will take any accolades I can get, even if they are laced with sarcasm... yes, I am that desperate.

This has been in the wind for a while, and obviously confirmed now that it's being reported in the Herald. I'd question anything Bill Brehl says though - the man is an unmitigated idiot.

I'll be curious to see what the ramifications of this are 3 years after the move. This is of course, a very American thing to do (pack up your tent for the burbs) which is no surprise given the American leaning of CP and Imperial.

It'll be interesting to see if both Esso and CP will be able to retain staff or entice people to move from opposite quadrants of the city to hop in their cars and drive. My guess is that as soon as the economy improves they will lose staff from the North and be somewhat limited to hiring from the South.

CP is clearly trying to launch a real estate play here, trying to develop a "Quarry Park" with their now vacant Ogden lands. Thing is - this is not pseudo upscale Quarry park, it's the armpit of Calgary, surrounded by industrial parks and blight in Ogden. Not to speak of the 100 or so years of contamination that needs to be cleaned up first. Got to love how the Sr Execs will have offices downtown, away from the people pulling oars though. Got to love the private equity crowd....

I'd be curious to know what the City's take is on this - who pays for the new transit routes required to service such an establishment? Or does the City just say - tough beans CP, organize your own shuttle? Can they refuse some sort of development permit? (I assume not)

The area isn't that bad... APC is there and they don't set-up just anywhere.

No idea what they'll do about transit, or if they need to do anything at all. There are already bus routes all through the area - don't forget the land where the new offices are going was home to a massive locomotive and railcar repair complex where hundreds of people were employed, so it's not like this is going to be a huge change for the area. I'd imagine most employees will just drive to work now that parking will be free - most of the people I know who take transit only do so because they don't want to spend crazy money to park downtown.

I'm pretty sure it will only be CP offices in the new area, I doubt they'll try and lease out to anyone else. For starters there are still some rail served customers down there, and not many companies are going to want their offices located in the middle of an active rail yard. Second, the remediation costs to get the site suitable for commercial use would be astronomical. I think CP can get around having to remediate the site before putting their own offices there because it is still technically being used for a railway-related activity.

Interesting that some seem to view these moves as a play to get DT rent rates to come down. I'd think it's a pretty significant financial commitment for a company to commit to a move like this in the first place so I doubt you'd see many of them saying "just kidding" and moving back in if the lease on their DT space suddenly went down.

I wouldn't say it's impossible - just wait for the next set of executives from the current ones....

Take Bell for an example - I know they made a big hoopla about moving our of Petro Canada into a campus style building in the NW and how awesome it was going to be. They reversed that decision and have taken up residence in Palliser South I see. Apparently it "didn't work out".

oving office to the suburbs will invariable PO half your staff - the question becomes whether you can hired enough from your catchment to make up for the attrition.

That has to be a hugely disruptive process.

Toronto seeing a reversal of what Calgary is going through now - companies moving from the suburbs back to downtown. Attracting the younger generation who live downtown in that city is cited.

“We are huge believers and huge bettors on the core becoming more and more prominent,” says Blake Hutcheson, president of Oxford. “The American dream is to live and work in the suburbs. The Canadian dream is to live and work downtown.”

I wonder how common that trend to move BACK into DT is, though...once companies get a taste of cheap rent and free parking, it 's a tough sell. Is this happening anywhere other than Toronto???

Article in the Herald about the move and the new building in Ogden.

http://www.calgaryherald.com/busines...451/story.html

Wow, what a piece of crap. A 2 floor "warehouse" for all of their office staff. I'll at least give IOL credit for breaking up their suburban campus at Quarry Park into multiple buildings and more floors.

I can't help but think that quite a few of the 1100 resumes at CP are being updated now.
