The quality of the player has to factor in too. You don't just call up a guy who can't stay in the line-up in the AHL up just because he fills a role. At some point you recognize that you don't have an NHL quality pest/agitator in your organization and either acquire one from another team or move forward without one.

We've called up Street, Byron, and Horak before him, Bouma is hurt....we want someone to fill a 4th line role with some size....I don't see any other options in Abbotsford.....much ado about nothing

Jarome was on the ice and was standing right in the blue paint looking calmly at the ref for a call I believe. I remember thinking "why on earth are you not going into rage mode and pounding on that chump Iggy?" Not the finest moment for the former Mark Messier award winner.
(if I'm proven wrong I will humbly eat crow, but I'm sure Jarome was there)

But this whole situation is exactly why this ridiculous "rebuild on the fly" strategy doesn't work. It's pretty evident to everyone now that this team is lacking major pieces necessary for success, but we're caught in an impossible situation where Feaster can't trade away any assets to improve the team. So we get stuck with shuffling a bunch of crappy players and hoping something works.

agreed. I'd be shocked if the kid stays up more than 5 games...
but whatever, at this stage, nothing shocks me anymore...

he was there but I didn't think he looked calm, even gave him a bit of a push...seemed to be weighing his options and trying to decide if he should trade 5 mins with a guy like Lewis....Iggy should not have to be fighting in that situation.

But before taking the step of giving up an asset for the type of player - why not test to see if you have the player internally?

They had Sven with Hudler and Comeau. Cervenka looks like the guy sitting out...and the fun continues! Must be pretty bad if Comeau gets to center an all skill line and you get to sit out eh Roman?

Good for Aliu. Hopefully he can successfully accomplish what he's being brought up to do, and that's use his 6'3" 230lb body to cause some havoc and provide energy. He's got to be a real shift disturber.

They've been giving Cervenka off the occasional non-game day practice. I wouldn't read too much into it if he wasn't at practice.

I agree with this. I doubt this will be the last call up. I hope all call ups can play a couple of games to get us through the point where making a trade to save the season is no longer an option. This team is not one gritty player away from being a good team.

I hope you're right, because I really like today's practice lines if you replace Comeau with Cervenka.
@Fan960Steinberg: #Flames lines: Tanguay-Stajan-Iginla; Glencross-Cammalleri-Stempniak; Hudler-Comeau-Baertschi; Aliu-Begin-Jackman

Agreed - the lack of grit is a problem, but just one of many.
The fact is the team just doesn't have enough good players. Adding some grit won't solve that.

Especially grit from a woefully underqualified player.

Its about time they actually used a center and moved Tanguay to LW, Stajan again gets the call to line up with Iggy and Tanguay, who last year had some decent production together.

If the Flames are not making the playoffs, I am all for having all their prospects getting a cup of coffee. Rewards them for hard work, and lets management see how close they are to the NHL. Either way, nothing to get excited at - negatively or positively. Nothing wrong in seeing how Aliu does, and I hope next time it will be Reinhart.

I like those lines, who knows if it translates to any success but it took long enough to finally try Stajan back b/n Tangs & Iggy...
Also I'd like to see what Cammy can do back at C position that 2nd line looks good, and swap Comeautose with Cervenka and you have yourself 3 decent lines, with an agitating 4th line.

I think we have plenty of talented players, it's just that none of them are centers. Iginla, Tanguay, Hudler, Baertschi, Stepniak, Cammy, Glencross, Cervenka are 8 talented wingers when we only really need 6 for the top 3 lines. If we could change two of them into equally skilled players who are natural centers I think we would be a good team. Similarly the Defense is skilled enough, and if Kipper wasn't hurt then goaltending is fine as well. But just like every year since the early 90s we don't have enough/any top quality centers.

Personally, what I see are a bunch of nice players but no difference makers which in my mind equals a below average team.

Cervenka also left the last game due to injury.
No shifts in the last five minutes of the second and only one shift the third.
I know he had left the bench for a bit but did return before the end of the game.

Was Sven still wearing the yellow jersey today?
