Fatal Hit and Run in NW Calgary
It GMG to know that two different vehicles drove AROUND the woman who was killed in a hit & run in the NW yesterday, before she was hit by the second car - who also fled the scene. Actually, it infuriates me.

Just another reason to lose hope in humanity. Just absolutely brutal and heartless.

How people can't stop in a situation like that is absolutely mind boggling. Imagine that being one of your friends or family; would they not want someone to stop and assist. Just ridiculous.
Thoughts go out to that woman's family. Who knows if she would have survived if she hadn't been hit by the second car.

My question- how did she get hit by 2 different cars? Was it that one car bounced her into the path of the other, or did one hit her when she was lying on the street.
I do like the sensationalizing of the news. Last night they were reporting that "cars get just driving around her as she lay there." Today they report it was 2 cars that drove around her. While definitely not cool; I could also understand that they may not have seen what was going on at 6:45 am.

I think this proves that people are more concerned about being late for the timmys drive thru or work than somebody who is motionless in the middle of a busy road.

This leaves me so unsettled. I know this area very well, and there are a lot of older Asian people who live around here. They get up early, go for a walk, and take the bus down to Chinatown to meet their friends/family.
I don't understand how at least two other cars drove past without even stopping or checking on her after being hit. I understand the panic that could happen when the driver hit her, but it's a human being. And then the other ones driving past, and let alone the second one that probably just drove over her and didn't even do anything about it. I don't care that it's rush hour and you're late for work. Be a human being and a good person and stop and check on the welfare of her, especially when she's lying in the middle of the road. If that were your family, would you have done the same thing?
I pray that the second driver is found or turns him/herself in. And as for the people that drove past, nothing can be done with them, but I don't see how they would be able to live with themselves knowing that they could have helped her and possibly even saved her before a second car drove over her. If that were me, I don't think I would ever be able to look someone in the face again and tell them that I drove away for any reason.
This is sad beyond belief. I'm absolutely infuriated with people and I feel utterly terrible for the family of this woman.

Its in the neighbourhood of where I live in. My friend lives just across the street from that accident. I didn't even realize it had happened or when it happened.

I agree completely with this... the one driver turned himself in, albeit 1 hour later. I seriously don't understand how society has gotten more cold and less caring for the well being of others...

it will be interesting to see if the drivers of the two mystery cars step forward after all of this publicity - maybe they drove around the pedestrian thinking she was something else on the road.
Just speculating, not making excuses

I saw a photo on the front page of the Herald yesterday that showed the woman covered in a sheet with what looked like her pink handbag beside her on the road (media seems to love to post these kind of photo's), so I can't see how she could have been mistaken for anything else.

The sheet wasn't there at the time and it was dark out. I am not an expert on the roads but it could also be that there was someone in an opposite lane or that the first couple cars had stopped and people think that the situation is under control. The media has a tendency to blow things out of proportion from time to time after all.

Did they drive by in the other direction or did they drive around the body in the same direction?

I drove by there probably 15 minutes after this happened. There were already about 10 cop vehicles all around the accident point. Figured something bad must've happened, but didn't see the news story until today.

It's bad enough that 2 vehicles hit and ran. But the fact that 2 other vehicles DROVE AROUND HER is despicable and disgusting. WTF is this world coming to when you people are so concerned with getting to work that they can't even stop to help save the life of another. I would hope that this story receives a lot more media attention and they focus on how those other 2 cards didn't stop. Those people deserve to be publicly shamed.

I would like to think you're right, but that's not what it sounds like:
Quote:
Two other drivers are believed to have driven around the woman after she had been hit the first time and failed to stop for her. They did not stay at the scene.
|
It's true media likes to blow things out of proportion, but this information is likely coming directly from CPS. From what it sounds like, they actually had to steer around her body to not hit her. Regardless of whether or not they knew it was a woman, if drivers see anything larger than a rodent on the road in the middle of the city it should cause them to take a second look. I would think everyone would...I certainly would!

You stop and look at every ice pile on side streets this time of year? I know there are some on my street that are bigger than a person.

I agree with those who are saying there is probably a reasonable explanation for the cars that didn't stop. Stopping in the middle of the street with no warning could be a good start. My question is, who was there to determine that the two cars drove around her? Who exactly is this information coming from? Could they be lying?
I guess I just find it extremely unlikely that people would see someone lying in the street and say 'meh'.
