A recent tour guide told me that he once had someone write on a comment card that the "Penguins were too small".

And I'm sure there's no chance he/she was being a tad facetious.

I would hate to see the comment cards for most tour operators.
I know that I, for one, have never filled out one of those things sober.

I spent a couple of weeks in a small town in Mexico on the west coast. It was not a resort town, but not completely absent of tourists. The guy renting the apartment next to ours actually complained that it was all Mexican food there and next time he was going to Cancun instead.

And there we have the difference between tourists and travelers.

Try working in a grocery store for a few weeks and you'll come to realize just how dumb people can be. Numerous times I'd have some one pointing at the price tag & asking what the price is. Now, I don't think these people were incapable of reading, I think they were trying to process the information they were seeing and with an employee standing right there the question in their head simply came out their mouth.

I had a woman ask me once when I was working as cashier if the meat she was buying was 100% beef, I looked at it expecting hamburger meat, it was a hunk of steak
I had nothing else to do so I sent the bagboy to go ask the meat department as I wasnt sure

No, some people are just unaware of what we have here; an environment where wildlife and humans live beside each other with a certain amount of harmony. I was up in Jasper a few years ago visiting my cousin who was working at the Fairmont Resort. A guest went to walk up and try to pet an elk. My cousin called the man away and explained to him that he shouldn't be approaching the animals like that. The man angrily asked my cousin "then why do you allow these animals to roam free if they aren't tame?"
If you have never seen animals outside of a circus or zoo setting, I suppose it could take some getting used to.

Yup, I lived in Banff for a year and saw this all the time. Tourist going to "pet" the elk/deer, even try to get a picture with their arm around it or their kids on it's back.
The best story I ever heard was about a tour group staying the Chateau Lake Louise, they asked one of the employees "How do you keep the lake such a beautiful colour?" to which he replied "oh we drain it about once a week and paint the bottom of it, we're actually doing that tonight".
The story goes that this entire tour group (or at least part of it) stayed up all night to see them drain/paint the lake bottom. The employee in question was fired shortly after.

Or retail. Or food services.
20+ years ago, we lived very far up north. Our little town had just gotten its first chain fast food place (KFC). A girl I had worked with previously, elsewhere, opened it up. It was so popular she needed extra temporary staff to keep up and asked me if I'd help out (previous experience as a teen), so I said sure.
No word of a lie, a woman came through drive thru and asked how many pieces of chicken were in a 4 piece meal. It was a good thing we had that stuff on the windows that allowed us to see out but the customer couldn't see in.

Yeah, this sort of stupidity is nothing new to anyone who's done a little time in the trenches in just about any retail or even customer service oriented business. Doesn't make it any less funny, though.
I was working as a Stage Manager for Shakespeare in the Park a few years back. Between the first and second acts, we turned on the lights since it got dark. But it was nicely timed that the sunset worked very well with the play. After the show one evening, a young lady came up to me and asked me how I had gotten the sun to set so nicely...
I told her that even God listens to a Stage Manager's directions.

I remember standing in the Coyotes souvenir store in Jobbing.com Arena. I was decked out in Flames stuff from head to toe, and one lady tapped me on the shoulder and started asking me questions assuming I worked there!

My favorite George Carlin act is quite relevant here.
"Just think how dumb the average person is, then realise that half the people are stupider than that."

I spent a number of years working in a grocery store and we used to play jokes on the new hires. A favourite one was to ask them to get a 20 pound bag of puffed wheat from the back room. Some actually looked and would come back saying they could find it. Others would go and stop halfway there realising the joke was on them.
Customers at times could be very stupid. There was this one lady who would come in to buy Palm dairy milk. Sometimes we would run and I would tell her to buy the Lucerne. She would say no as the Palm milk tastes better. I would ask why and she woud say that Palm milk came from Palm cows and Lucerne from Lucerne cows. As hard I would try I could never convince her other wise.

Afew yars ago a Quiznos opened up by my office. I went at night when i was working late. The menu at the time included
Beef and Cheddar; and
Black Angus Steak melt
I asked what the difference between the two was, as the Angus also came with Cheddar cheese.
The guy behind the counter looked at me like an idiot, and with all sorts of attitude in his voice told me that
The beef is beef meat?!? The Angus is angus meat!?!?
I forget what i ordered but wish i had asked for one that comes from cows
