Ducks re-sign Viktor Fasth (2 years, $2.9m/yr)
Well, that happened fast(h).
As per TSN. $2.4m next year, $3.4m in the second year.

The guy has been playing at a very high level all year. Hillier appears to have met his replacement earlier than he may have thought he would. Good signing.

So this guy plays 9 games and gets 3m per... weren't people saying 4m was a lot for Schneider after 60 games?

Fasth is 30, I dont think he is going to be a replacement. I would say its more likely that it's an affordable tandem at most than anything else.
Gives them some depth as long as he isn't just a flash in a pan

Well $4 million for what appears to be the Canucks present backup goaltender is on the pricey side.

I'm just saying the general criticism of that deal was the inexperience factor. I don't know how you give this guy a contract after 9 games, why not wait until the end of the year or thereabouts? It's not like they got him for cheap here.

There is no doubt it's an impressive record but it seems almost every year there comes a relatively unknown goaltender has a lights out stretch of his career that is unable to replicate that success in following seasons.

His rise has been remarkable. The guy didn't make it to the Swedish 2nd league until he was 25, his first game in the Swedish 1st league came when he was 28 years old. NHL debut two years later ... not bad.

I'm in agreement that it was a little quick to be handing out $6 million for 8 games but I imagine the Ducks are trying to get their finances in order sooner than later to find out if they can keep one or both of Getzlaf and Perry.
Maybe they will try to ship out Hiller to free up money and cap space?

Wonder if they are thinking about trading Hiller in order to re-sign both Getzlaf and Perry?

My thoughts exactly.
Flames inked Turek to an extension just 19 games into the 2001 season after he got off to a blistering start with the club, posting a 1.62 GAA and .940 save percentage for a 13-2-2 record.
And as every Flames fan knows his play dropped off considerably before the ink was dry, eventually ending with a 30-28-11 record and leaving the Flames, once again, out of the playoffs.
I guess the benefit to the Ducks is the contract isn't as large or long as Turek's was. And they have a pretty darn good goalie in Hiller if Fasth goes into the toilet.
Still, it feels like a risky move, and unnecessary. He'll still be there near the end of the season, eagerly accepting a contract extension.

Fasth played in the Swedish elite league. Is the Swedish league better than the KHL? I really don't know, don't follow those leagues much except for prospects point totals.

I don't know if Ramo will be any good in the NHL or not, but Fasth was playing in a lower level before this season as well.

The existence of another rash decision doesn't render previous rash decisions suddenly intelligent.
