Staying in the top flight can be similar to Wegner's ‘a top four finish is like a trophy’, eventually you might just fancy a real one instead even if it isn't as lucrative. Also, cup magic is some addictive stuff.

So winning promotion would just be met with a pleased smile?

It would be nice and I'd celebrate accordingly but let's be honest, the extra income we'd be receiving does not match the extra money a club like Charlton would need to be competitive in the Premiership and get the full experience. By winning the cup on the other hand, we'd be in it every step of the way and get all the glory of winning a pretty prestigious trophy. The F.A. Cup is the highest level of competition in which we can actually compete, it really is the best we can do.
It might be a one time high but it would exceed the joy I got out of a normal match week when Charlton were in the top flight during the naughties.

You wouldn't get that one time high at a match that won you promotion? And on top of that you'd get the opportunity to experience the highs of winning matches against much bigger clubs on a weekly basis, not just a couple of times in the cup.

There is something exciting about a knockout tournament that a league cannot replace.
Winning matches against much bigger clubs consistantly in a league format is almost impossible.

There have been some pretty emotional promotions but even those might just match winning the cup. Also, if we won the cup instead of promotion in those emotional years the only thing that would top that would be winning the league or CL in those years. Winning promotion is an awesome high but winning the second tier isn’t as glorious as winning the cup. In addition, winning promotion is part of an end goal to top the football pyramid while winning the cup is the end goal when you take part in that competition (i.e. you can’t do any better than win the cup).
It's great beating United in the league but those 3 points are often forgotten as they probably merely helped us to jump from 13th to 12th. Compare that to slaying a giant on your way to having your club's named etched in history; those victories actually achieve something you can measure. I’ll remember great league victories but winning the cup is simply unforgettable.

Pity then that the competition i.e. the FA cup isn't sacrosanct to ..... the FA. See Schmeichel above.
In days of old before you started following soccer it used to be a high priority to ALL the clubs. That is simply not the case now.

Albion sign Matthew Upson on loan from Stoke City for the remainder of the season.
Decent signing and lots of people on the south coast are buzzing over this one.
Well done Gus.

NBC, what would you think of Arsenal loaning Ryo Miyaichi to your Seagulls? Would it be a good fit for both sides?
Ryo isn't getting much time at Wigan* and I think both playing time and playing in the more rugged Championship would be good for the kid. Also, I think I've heard some talk about football being played the right way down on the coast.
*Injuries have played their part but even before his ankle injury I thought his playing time was limited.

Gus likes to play with at least one quick-footed winger. Right now he's got Kaz LuaLua and Will Buckley, who if you remember from the recent match at the Amex, tore up and down Arsenal's left flank with impunity.
I'm not overly familiar with Miyaichi, but he sounds like the sort of guy Gus likes to have around. Unfortunately, most of the emphasis during the January transfer window went to securing some much needed CB coverage.
Gus' footballing philosophy is to keep the ball on the ground. All of the squad is comfortable on the ball and a few are exceptional (Vicente most notably). It is a delight to watch, though goals have been hard to come by at times.

I hope so. I'll cheer for Oldham, why not?
Listening to the stories from the commentators is hilarious.
Apparently, they've changed ball manufacturers for the FA cup and they're going to change again, but you have to buy the balls in order to train with them. The balls cost £70 a piece and Oldham cant afford that so when they beat Liverpool they asked if they could have theirs and LFC gave theirs to them.

And that was pretty well Arsenal's first team.

to be fair, their 2 best (Wilshere, Cazorla) didn't start
to be even more fair, they came on before Blackburn scored
to be most fair, Wenger played Gervinho so there is a chance he threw the game , mark down this date and see if Europol mentions it at a match fixing press conference in 3-4 years

What a finish!
The money Oldham will get from half the gate at Goodison will be huge for them.

They'll finally be able to afford the FA cup balls! Go all the way Oldham!

that is the tricky thing, home draw usually brings about more cupsets
but an away game at Old Trafford for example can probably double the income of a lot of clubs in a fiscal year
Goodison is 40k so that will go a nice long way for Oldham
