Albino Rhino No No?
Albino Rhino no more...
Quote:
Earls Restaurants will drop its Albino Rhino brand in response to a B.C. Human Rights Tribunal complaint the moniker discriminates against people with the genetic condition.
In a press release Friday, Earls Restaurants said it will remove the word "albino" from all products and marketing by April 24.
|
I'm down with being sensitive to people's various sensibilities, but this one I just don't get.
If the beer was called "Albino Beer" I suppose I'd get where they're coming from, but albinism is a condition that affects lots of different animals (including Rhinos), and there's nothing derogatory in the naming or marketing of the beer itself. I've tried to think of parallels I'd sympathize with, but am drawing a blank on it (no pun intended). Can someone explain why "Albino Rhino" beer would be offensive to a person with albinism?

The problem with the Albino Rhino name pales in comparison to actual Rhinos being endangered.

I would really like to meet the person who filed this complaint so I could laugh at them.

No, it doesn't. Man, this stuff has gone too far. Anyone ever see the Scandinavian movie "The bothersome man"?
If anything, maybe it discriminates against white rhinocerous', but until they file a complaint, I'll treasure the pint glasses I have.
Oh and brilliant double pun steely!

This is such a dumb thing to be made into such a big deal. I rolled my eyes when I saw the story on Global National last night.
Was it REALLY that slow of a news day?

While this is one of my favourite beers, I can't help but think this name is offensive to some people and demand it be changed to Tug IPA

Well her over sensitivity and the RC's stupidity probably just threw a bunch of people out of work.
If this beer was called ###### Jim beer it would be offensive.
Absolutely stupid.

I thought it was pretty stupid too, but then again, I'm not an albino. Maybe if I was, I'd get sick of hearing jokes and getting looked at funny. Maybe I wouldn't go to earls to avoid the waitress blurting out "I'll get YOU an albino".
It seems like a pretty silly thing to get uppity about, but I think we'd all agree that naming a beer after Downs Syndrome would be pretty politically incorrect. I guess albinos have feelings too. As a guy with a big nose, I'm not too concerned about the Rhino part of the name, and won't be filing any complaints.

If they re-named the beer "Rhino with Albinism" that'd be fine.
Person-first language and all that, blah blah blah.

Oh this is just beyond ridiculous...they've had that brand of beer for 25 yrs and someone flys in from another country and takes offense? What is really bringing you down that much?

There have been famous Albino Rhino's, the beer is named after them and not the conditions, they've probably spent millions on branding.
They should sue the crap out of the RC because there's no link between the name of the beer and the persons conditions, and the beer is certainly not making fun of the human's conditions.
this is why these HRC in their current forms need to go away.
