Young guy with money says something stupid? How old is he? 21, well there you go. Most people don't mature until they reach 25ish, 21 of course he said something that dumb. Expect young and immature people to say young and immature things as well as doing incredibly stupid things. I heard a story of Iginla swimming out in the ocean for $100 or something right after he signed his first big contract when he was young, could've easily killed him.

Not at all. It was implicit from the paragraph prior to the one you bolded that I was referring to black kids who embrace hip hop culture.

I agree, that there's a media stereotype. And not every person will conform to that stereotype, be they from east Vancouver (like Kane) or Compton. But, I also feel its wrong to criticize someone for choosing to conform to a stereotype - especially one with broad racial underpinnings like the hip hop scene.

All I'm saying is that when Canadians look down their noses at a young black man for simply embracing aspects of the hip hop lifestyle, there's often an element of cultural prejudice there.

So does that same racism exist when we make fun of people for adopting the Jersey Shore lifestyle? Or Hillbilly lifestyle?

People making fun of him for adopting the so-called hip hop lifestyle aren't racist they are making fun if a stupid philosophy that can be adopted by whites, blacks, orientals, SE Asians, Hispanics etc.

I found the "genuinely black" line to be far more troubling. Like there's some sort of tipping point at which you get to claim genuine blackness

^So did I but I thought it would lead to a bigger discussion I wasn't in the mood for.

pic.twitter.com/9qYibEa8 Kane reading to kids yesterday. As a non visible minority I wonder if this has different impact to some of these kids

"Mullato" has been around for centuries, replaced more lately by "Mixed" or "biracial."

Google the phrase "Is Beyonce Black?" No shortage of links.

The debate is probably becoming more casual versus serious these days but nevertheless "who is genuinely black" has been something debated for centuries.

Differentiating between black and 'genuinely black?'

Who gets to determine the parameters that define 'genuine-ness?'

Racism within race. Interesting.

It's not even about race, it's about a kid growing up in the mean streets of West van pretending like he's lil wayne. A guy who grew up in the slums of the 3rd ward of New Orleans.

Kid needs to grow up

After following Kane's development with the Giants, & liking the talent/compete level, I was prepared to cut him slack over things like the Vegas pics.

Not any more. Immaturity is an excuse for some things. Not being a conceited prima donna & using race as an excuse.

Hope reality knocks him on his ass.

he's 21 for gods sake. I don't know many 21 year olds that are mature and humble, most are insecure and meek or arrogant douchy. If anything I'd be surprised if he was a perfect gentleman that contributed to charity and hid his money.

Yeah I get it and it is still a pretty dumb measuring stick to use.
