It would have counted if he retired and he contract kicked in when he's over 35.

It's been clear since the eye injury he wasn't the same player

sounds like he will stay on in the organization going forward, his agent said Vancouver is his home now. So either something like Conroy does for the Flames or maybe in coaching.

Great guy and it's a shame his career was shortened, will be a great asset to the team going forward

Ben Kuzma ‏@benkuzma Gillis made decision on Malhotra last year but centre convinced GM that he would be better with offseason training.

Ben Kuzma ‏@benkuzma Gillis on Malhotra move, not risking centre's health: "I took (made) the decision form him."

Which is neat and all, but the convenience of this is hard to ignore, even as a Canucks fan. You better believe the NHL is gonna ask for all the particulars.

I was just relaying tweets. I wasn't posting in response to any suggestions of a fix.

Not hard to prove. Malhotra's vision in his left eye likely isn't up to NHL standards.

Career is likely over, which is a damn shame. He was the center the Canucks had been desperate for and helped propel the the Sedins and Kesler. That said, he was worse than mediocre last season outside of face-offs and wasn't much better this season. That injury turned his career into a lit stick of dynamite and now it exploded =\.
It's pretty hard to look good when you're starting by far the most shifts of any player in the league in your own end.

Kesler coming back helps the Canucks a lot obviously, but he'll be called upon to take on even tougher assignments than he already does which will very likely limit his offensive production.

Wouldn't the Canucks then be in trouble for allowing him to play until now?

IIRC there is a standard that the eyes must pass in order to play in the NHL.

If he fails that test now then he was playing the last three weeks when he shouldn't have been.

If he passes the test then this looks like a convenient way to have Malholtra fill a role while Kesler was out only to open up a spot for him when he was ready to return.

Lots of weird little things going on in this situation that are a conspiracy theorists dream.

He was training his eye? That seems like a pretty flimsy argument.

No, it was suggested that his drop off in play more to do with his inability to do off-season workouts two summers ago as opposed to the eye problems. Clearly it was not the case as he had all of the lockout to get in shape.

Not quite what I meant. He looked slower, he'd lost a step in both skating and reaction speed. He also had a habit of losing his man in deep, something he never did that first season.

It is upsetting, but he just wasn't the same player.
