Same as the "using your hand on the faceoff" rule or the "clearing the puck over the glass" penalty.

The referees are too incompetent and/or stupid to call penalties correctly, so you either wind up with nothing called and excruciatingly boring games or everything called and games being reduced to diving contests. Realizing this, the league puts in a bunch of automatic-penalty rules for innocuous things that barely affect the game, so the games have more power plays and more goals without the referees having to do their jobs properly.

This is the rule
Quote:
The NHL added a component to Rule 67, which prohibits players from closing their hand on the puck. This season, if a player covers the puck on the ice “in order to conceal it from or prevent an opponent from playing the puck,” he will receive a minor penalty. The existing rule that covering the puck in the goal crease results in a penalty shot for the opponent still stands.
I don't see how what Wideman did is that.

I'm having to double take every time I see the scoreboard for the Flames, whether it's 4, 5 or 6 goals.

Just unreal.

Nothing really newsworthy although it was a rare time when an ex-teammate of Iginla kind of spoke up about him. Nothing about his character just an observation by Warrener that it looks like Iggy lost that competitive fire he used to have.

What do you judge it on?

He looks good for 3 and looks terrible in 8.

And it's not just me. Bob Mackenzie just said the same thing.

So I infer from this that the league was trying to take the judgement out of the call and just issue a blanket rule.

While I can understand the reasoning behind that rationale, it was a really dumb decision to make. Plays like what Wideman did shouldn't be penalized in any hockey universe. Just a silly penalty all the way around, really.

Yeah, I do. He's been angling for this type of thing since he's been on theFan. Since day one I've had the feelings he wants a big time job on TSN or something. I'm finding him to be real scummy. NHL players go on to become good analysts not just sharing inside info (his Heatly comments).

Look at Jamie McLennen... Noodles probably has tonnes of back room stories but instead does a good job of breaking down games and plays and not go on the air sharing BS stories.

I've felt this about Warrener for sometime since he's been on the air. Don't know how often I've expressed it but this has given me an opportunity to say it more.

Irving's been a bit shaky but the team has definitely given him some help tonight. Should be a great third period :-)

Bob mckenzie on tsn saying Ivring needs to be better and feels Flames got Joey Macdonald because they are not 100 percent convinced on Ivring.

I'm loving Cervenka. He's not the best player out there, but I think it's an awesome signing for our team, and the kind of secondary scoring that we needed. Every line looked the same last season, now they seem to have uniqueness line to line, make the offense more exciting.
