Meh, I don't mind a small gift for what the mothers have to endure. 9 months of pregnancy is difficult enough but labour is just insane.

Bubbsy - I would have said a camera, but you mentioned a tight budget. If you can make it work, it is a great gift.
Also - if you can throw in a day-long course that shows her all the features, etc. to use it, that would be really helpful.
Also - for the record, I did not get a push-present, nor did I expect one. But it is really nice you want to show her you appreciate what she is going through.

Do the wives feel obligated to get guys a "sorry I was a bit crazy" present for dealing with a cranky pregnant woman for months?
Push present sounds ridiculous.

Does the guy get a 'push present' for doing the initial pushing 9 months prior?

My wife is big into this push present scam. Dont do it as they only get more expensive. Get a real nicevalentines present though. Also take her for a night out and show that you are still excited to be seen with her. They can get self concious, which is dumb because the whole baby thing is pretty cool, but a little support that way from you can go a long way.
Push presents are a scam though.

Agreed.
I was iffy about the whole idea until watching my wife go through the 9 months of pregnancy and then a labour and delivery that was anything but routine (is there such a thing as a routine birth experience?). She went through 3 days of contractions, 12 hours of hard, induced labour, and then a semi-emergency C-section which saw our child stuck and then got a little dicey afterwards due to my wife's hemophilia - I started to envision the opportunity to be a mother being taken from her entirely when they couldn't stop the bleeding.
After seeing her go through that whole process, then to be in the hospital for days afterwards, not to mention the whole recovery from a C-section with complications, a token to express my heartfelt thanks, gratitude, and frankly, awe of everything she went through to bring our daughter safely into this world seemed like the very least I could do.

Considering some of the costs associated with children, my wife's push present was that the heat stayed on.

push present?? what the??
my wife is due mid-march... i figure she got my seed so my work is now done! ha! ha!
i have never even considered a 'push present'. if she brings it up i guess i'll just say that all the baby furniture i'm building now is the push present. i hadn't originally planned on building furniture until she showed my how much it cost for the stuff she wanted. i figure it will cost at most $400 in materials to build the storage bench (done), dresser (done), baby changing 'thing' (done) and crib (starting it tomorrow). had we purchased everything it would have been close to $3000!!
now that i think about it, my dad bought my mom a vacuum when i was born.... probably not the kind of present she was hoping for! ha! ha! oh well, they're still together after close to 50 years, so he must have done something right!

Good call on the nice diaper bag. Mat and Nat have a nice one if you can find them.
I preferred the non-alcoholic coolers.

Should have done a water birth.. My wife didn't tear at all.

Sitting in a pool for my 42 hour labour wouldn't have helped. Thanks for the thought though.

Holy crap. She deserved a new car for that effort. Good for her. And good for you for appreciating what she did.
I think for many women, it's not that they expect anything, and a kind word of thanks or expression of appreciation that what they went through was pretty extreme is all they would really like.

What does that say about kermitology's wife?
Anything that my husband bought me was never termed a "push present". hey were just things that were nice to have at the time (massage, camera, vacation...)I think that just getting her a Valentine's present will be fine.
