If he has no better offers, then Feaster should sign him. Pump up his value, then trade him at the deadline for whatever picks a desperate playoff bubble team is willing to offer.

How about we call up Brendan Morrison, Tony Amonte and Jeff Friesen too? Signing Arnott would be a classic Sutter move and I'm surprised this is being bandied about. If one if the coaches is pushing this per the OP, Feaster has to put his foot down as this is ludicrous.

You guys are bang on the 50 contract thing - we are handcuffing ourselves if we sign Arnott and while we think that Feaster would dump a contract if we are the least bit close, consider last year where we did not sell despite conventional wisdom that we weren't going to make the playoffs. Feaster told me at the U of T talk that he wished he would have dealt Hannan for a 7th but he held on and we were again pushed against 50 contracts which limited the NCAA free agents.

As for C depth, Connolly/Santorelli can be had for a song. Better options than Ben Street and Florida/Toronto would be happy to take a contract back and the latter would probably pay some salary. Low risk high reward move, i hope it is being considered.

Me too but he was pretty candid. But nothing wrong with a free 7th rounder, would have been another lottery ticket and Nick Ebert was available, would have lived the high risk pick (not to derail the topic)

Here's my problem with this..

While I like Arnott and in fact have wanted the Flames to go after him before

My issue with acquiring Arnott is that being a pretty decent band-aid option to fill in down the middle until we regain full strength with Backs' return, it might be just the right ingredient for another typical 9th place finish. That's what I see here, an option that keeps us up to par (meaning bubble team level of play through our injuries), but doesn't push us past that. Now, offering a trade for, or a signing sheet to a Ryan O'Reilly, is where the team starts looking to have a chance to push into the top 8. Arnott potentially just keeps the team strong enough at center to land around 9th-10th again if they make their usual late push.

Don't get me wrong, I want to see the team turn it around this season. But I want to see them make a move that is more than a band aid signing, or nothing at all. Either you aim for a legitimate chance at playoffs, or you ride it out with what you have and if the team doesn't gain ground, they win BIG in the draft. There are franchise type players in the top 5. It would be a crying shame to see them fill the hole down center with a 1 year contract for a 38-year old, only to finish in the middle of the pack and lose out on all that they could have had.

I'd be so mad.

This team is going nowhere with acquiring guys like Arnott. This is daryll kind of acquisition to desparately save the season. Give young guys a change. If it doesn't work you have top draft pick. This is exactly what keeps flames in the 9-10th place limbo with no playoffs and no top talent from the draft.

But they did think he was good enough. He just wasn't healthy enough. If he fixes whatever the problem is - there isn't an issue.

Not that I want to see Arnott signed, but the reason the deal fell thru with the Rangers is they weren't confident his knee was 100% yet.

You'd have to offer in the range of $5million if you believe what he's asking for.

Compensation in that range is a 1st and 3rd.

I'm not sure I'd be giving up our 1st and 3rd in the upcoming draft (so we wouldn't have any picks until the 4th round) for RoR.

I think they mostly wanted him as a fill-in until Kreider returns from injury, at which point he would become the 13th forward. If they didn't feel his knee was 100% it wouldn't make sense to sign him only to have Kreider come back and make him pointless.
