The big fear should be that we use this as an excuse for why this season is a failure (remains to be seen, but hard to be optimistic) and give the same group a second crack at it next year.

If we get first overall I would ask if the second place drafting team is interested in Jones and trade down one spot to recoup our second round pick. I don't really want to be taking a D man.

After three games with Kipper gone where the Flames are 1-1-1 I personally don't see a major drop off in the results as I would venture to guess that the Flames go 1-1-1 with Kipper starting those games. Ten games in and not a single one where the goaltender has stolen a win for the Flames so the next one will be the first and who knows it may be Irving or MacDonald.

Then this team is doomed and will have to rely on dumb luck like in '04 to make any noise again.

I agree with those that want MacKinnon over Jones but I wouldn't be upset if we did end up with Seth.

I'd be thrilled with any of McKinnon, Jones, Drouin, or Barkov. However, our more pressing need is up front so I'd prefer the 3 forwards to Jones.

I just cant see this team finishing poorly enough to pick in the top 3. Hopefully we are sellers are the deadline and do indeed finish last to get Mack. This team deperatley needs a top line center so I really hope we can manage to tank hard enough get Mack, Barkov, or Monahan.

Even with Kipper out, I don't see us in MacKinnon/Jones territory.

It looks like this may be our year, there just may not be enough time in the season for these guys to get their act together.
I was hoping for this season to go differently, the Flames typically start slow and then put together two months of actual quality hockey before the inevitable end of season faceplant.
I was kind of hoping maybe we'd get lucky and the season would end before the 'faceplanting' stage. Now it looks as though this season is going to be one big, long tragedy.

I don't think Kippers injury is as bad as some of you are making it out to be. He may be 36, but this is his ONLY injury since 2004. That sounds pretty fuggin' durable to me and is a testament to how good shape he is in.
This guy has played 70+ games/season since the lockout and all of a sudden there is talk of him never being the same again and how this will become a chronic issue??? I'll give Kipper the benefit out a doubt.

Are we bad enough for 3-5th overall then?
Sean Monahan
Scout's take: "Few players possess the out-ight determination that Monahan displays," says David Burstyn, director of scouting for McKeen's Hockey. "Monahan hates to lose and his sheer ability to pick up his game in clutch situations has been a trademark for the Mississauga native. Monahan already has two gold medals, World U-17 Challenge and Ivan Hlinka in which he played a pivotal role in Team Canada's success. What makes him so special is his ability to make others around him better. His hockey sense in the offensive zone is uncanny as he is extremely effective skating off the half boards and making a play. Combined with his lethal snapshot, he is a threat both as a shooter and a play maker."
Comparable is Johnathan Toews, can't go wrong with this center either.

In the end if we can't turn it around, I see us around 4th - 5th ish spot, but that's just my opinion. Any of Monahan, Barkov, Lindholm or Drouin and I'd be happy.

Still finishing 30th is still not a guaranteed 1st overall pick.
