Build up episodes like these are tolerable when you're blasting through a whole season at a time on your PVR or Netflix. Leading off the second half of the season with one after all the hype and build up from the mid-season finale is a mistake.
As others have said, the outcome of the Dixon Brothers fight, Michone's "plate of poop under her nose at all times face" and refusing to talk, Rick's return to crazytown, Darryl's decision to follow his brother, Andrea in general... all of it came across as lazy writing or out of character reactions. I don't know if changes to the writing staff are partially responsible or Mazzara doesn't care any more knowing he's done as show runner at the end of the year or if the production lost momentum during the hiatus or I'm just being hypercritical of a show about a zombie apocalypse. Maybe a combination, I suppose.

The hype got them some good numbers..
Quote:
The episode, titled "The Suicide King," pulled in 12.3 million total viewers in its 9 p.m. airing, more than the 10.3 million who turned in for the Season 3 premiere, the series' previous record. Even against CBS's Grammy Awards telecast, "The Walking Dead" drew 7.7 million viewers among adults 18 to 49, a record for basic cable and a 6-percent increase from the October premiere.

Yah, but still...
I thought they announced it around the end of last year? You're probably right though: everything was written and shot by then so the show runner probably didn't have nearly as much influence from that point forward as he would earlier in the process.

As in zombie movies, nobody has heard of zombies before, black characters similarly do not know of their imminent, yet heroic fates.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.
That was a great episode, even with Rick still "wandering crazy town".
Haha.

I gotta say, I loved that slight little moment of vulnerability Merle showed when Darryl said he was going back to the prison.
It was just a split second, but was a great moment for his character IMO. I couldn't believe it, but after all the bad things he's done, I suddenly started liking him after that.
Crazy.

If last season they took to long to get to things, I feel this season they're rushing things.
Still, pretty fun last half hour. Daryl with a cool car smash zombie kill.

Why would the governor stop though? that was kinda ridiculous. He should have kept on hammering them like the Flames in the 3rd period.
Still it was 100 times better than last episode even with Maggie going full ######.

Anyone notice that during the gunfight the governor had an eye patch on his right eye, then in the preview for next week his left eye is the mangled one?

He's looking into a mirror in the preview.

Has anyone else noticed that the whole Rick going nutso and seeing his dead wife, all while having leadership troubles really seems like a giant ripoff of Jack's storyline in the first season of Lost? All you need to do is just switch out dead wife to Jack's dead father. Heck you can even see parts of Locke in Hershel's scene with Rick tonight.
But yes a solid improvement over last weeks episode. Less Andrea is always a good thing.

"He's Korean."
"Whatever!"
That season 1 reference made me giggle. Also, Axel went out like a champ.

I must of missed that. The driver being a chick and wearing a mask must have some relevance.
