Default North Korea detonates third nuclear test bomb

North Korea has detonated an 10 Kiloton equivalent nuclear device at their test facility. South Korean seismic stations detected the event earlier today. UN security council is due to hold an emergency meeting shortly to discuss actions against NK.

China, Russia and everyone on the security council seems to be consistent in their condemnation of NK. Seems like China and Russia certainly don't want the trouble along their borders

Disturbing news to say the least, but not a big surprise. The question is, was this bomb suppossed to have a 10kt yield, or was it something bigger that fizzled.

Usually bombs of that size are pretty basic, its not a large bomb.

However the question now, can the NK missiles carry this warhead.

If they do have the bullet and the gun it destabilizes things in that region.

Their previous tests were 1 and the 2kt I believe. I'm guessing a combination of both poor design and not much fissile material. Obviously a 10kt device could still put a serious damper on Gangnam style.

NK has no shortage of materials to build a bomb, the question is the efficiency of their reactors which are based around 60's Soviet designs.

The biggest worry now is that South Korea will now start to think about their own Bomb program, they had a secret bomb program in the 60's but it shut down when the U.S. put them firmly under the American deterrence umbrella.

With things the way they are the SK government secretly doubts that the American's will feel the same obligation to defend them against a NK attack.

To be clear the SK army would wipe the map with NK if the North ever decided to "Liberate" the South. The question would be based around Chinese involvement as they hate the NK government, but having an American ally on their border would be unacceptable.

Something needs to be done in this country, not just because of their nuke program or their threats but because of the crimes against humanity on their own people.

I agree with this.

I know Seoul is basically toast if any type of agression towards NK takes place. It needs to be an inside job.

What are you going to do besides sanctions? Which by the way don't work on a country who has pounded the message of self reliance into the heads of their people over the last 3 generations. When Kim Jong-Il died and we saw the people crying in the streets that was a genuine emotion, they are so controlled and indoctrinated that they believe that what they have is better then anyone else. For the most part if you read defector stories they rarely have a hate on for the government and the Kim's and are shocked at what they see in the free world.

Plus sanctions don't work because we always back down due to the human suffering there.

Lets be really clear about the mindset, the detonation of a nuclear device is a negotiating tactic by that government, something that Kim Jung-Un has been highly educated in. The expectation is that the outsiders including China will give in on something in exchange for curtailing their nuclear program.

If going back to sanctions everyone cuts off aid supply, the government and the Kim's won't care, they've got room 43 (I think its 43) they'll eat well. The peasant class can be sacrificed and is willing to sacrifice in exchange for the concept of Juche.

You can't invade them, yes their army is antiquated now but the summer isn't good for armored mobility and the winter is man killing. Combine that with the Northern Artillary belt that makes Soeul and millions of people vanish in about 10 minutes of continuous firing. On top of that the North will use its huge and highly trained special forces units to not only sow destruction in the South, but fight a brutal insurgency battle in the North that will make the Iraqi and Afghanistan insurgency look like 4 guys with fire crackers.

Kim Jung-Un and his family form a nearly untouchable mafia, there will never be a people's uprising because they feel great love for the leaders due to decades of harsh indoctrination, and on top of that fear of North Korean intelligence and their justice system.

The only way that government topples is when the last Kim family member dies. But that is a difficult job as they have taken paranoia and security way past what a Hussien did. We'd never get to him.
