If you think Dion was not worth more than the Flames got for him, then you are a fool.
If everyone wants what you have because of a false impression, you get no bonus points for setting the record straight and taking less. This is sport. Like a game, each trade has a winner and a loser.
Iggy is worth what someone will trade for him. You don't know until you try, what that is. I have no idea how you test the waters without nuking the fanbase though.

It was pretty mental for the Chicago game. But I've been on the road too much to take clients to games, so I only have that to go on.
I think the Flames could be 30th for 5 years and stills ell out every game. There is no big league competition. Even if seats are empty (as they were shortly before the cup run) they are paid for.
All bets are off if oil stays low though.
I say this as someone that would still probably go to games/buy jerseys/etc.

Call me selfish, but trade him to the team that gets us the best return.

Boston doesn't really have anything worth while to trade for Iggy without parting with Seguin or Hamilton.

Jarome Iginla
Jay Bouwmeester
for
David Krejci

Boston's best prospects are not really the type of prospects you'd want in a return for Iginla IMO......and their probable late first rounder won't make up the difference either.....again, IMO.
Also, chances are not very good (close to nil, more likely) that Boston will trade Kreijci, Seguin, or Hamilton to get Iginla. They will want to add Iginla to their current roster in order to make it stronger.....not subtract from it while adding Iggy in what will be seen as a slightly better than lateral move, at best.
If Iginla were to be traded, Pittsburgh has some nice prospects IMO, especially on D.

It doesn't really matter that the return today is not as good as the return 3 years ago. You still need to get whatever you can for an asset that will walk away next year.
I don't get this "oh the return sucks, shoulda traded him 3 years ago, best to keep him now" argument.
It's past, it's a sunk cost already. You trade him for whatever you can get, better than letting him walk for nothing.
He's not so stupid to sign here long term, he knows the ship is sinking.

that's fracking brutal for the Flames. Plus there's this thing called the salary cap that could kill the move.
If we were putting out a package of a top pairing defensemen and Iginla I would want a whole hell of a lot more back then that package, that 1st round pick might as well be a second round pick.

Here is the thing, and I started a thread about it last season.
The flames aren't interested in picks. Even if they trade Iginla, which I actually don't think will happen, they will still very likely be unable to admit publicly or to themselves that the team is in a rebuilding mode.
Calgary is not interested in draft picks. Calgary wants PLAYERS.
Unfortunately, teams that have good rosters full of good players in a good position heading into the playoffs don't trade those good players. Good teams don't trade good players right before they are likely to need them in order to win. They will, however, readily trade draft picks as draft picks have their lowest value to a team when they believe they are on the cusp of winning.
The example is the lightning and the predators. Tampa wanted a goalie, the preds had one to give up. The lightning wanted the preds goalie, but the preds weren't interested in trading him at the deadline. Why? Because they might have needed him!
Asking for substantial roster returns from teams for deadline deals is a pretty good way to get less value for an asset that you'd be able to by taking picks as well.
I mean, I even think it's a stretch that Calgary would get a return of Oshie+ from St.Louis. I doubt they'd be willing to part with any roster player unless over the course of the season they've been a routine odd-man-out like Kris Russell.

That is why I could see the Flames settling for Kreider or Miller from the Rangers. I know the Rangers would not part with Krieder for Nash but the Jackets wanted him in addition to Dubinsky, 1st etc. I think Krieder + 2nd for Iggy could work if NY is in a good spot at the deadline

A low first or a second at this stage, try to imagine what the Flames would give up to get Ryan Smith, would anyone think giving up a first and a decent young player would make sense.

Did you seriously just compare Iginla to Ryan Smyth?
That is flat out assinine.

The dome has been a library the last few times i've been there, and it will only get worse if the team isn't infused by winning or a change in attitude. I think there will be more fans willing to go see exciting youth and top prospects that lose but hopefully show promise rather than the same substandard on-ice product year after year. Management has to realize at some point, you'd hope, that the glitter from the 2004 cup run is gone.
Selling us on kipper/iginla as the premiums players to take us back to the promised land is starting to feel a bit ridiculous considering its been almost a decade since the cup run.

Like most teams these days, the Flames financial support comes from the corporate sector. As long as the Calgary business class enjoy shmoozing at NHL games, the Flames revenue will be fine.

Would love either of these trades (espically the NJ one) however there's no way they'd happen. Take out Henrique and Sutter then it'd be closer to happening IMO.

What about adding Tanguay or Glenx(would rather hold onto Glen but...)? Upgrade on Boychuk for Pit and for NJ would be their number 2 left wing.
