Default Of all the peoeple the media say I should respect...

These 2 are pretty close to the top of my list.

Not sure if I would have the courage to make the same journey if I was in their position.

I dont care if people dont think this is its own thread worthy.

They said they are hoping for a better life in Fort McMurray, Alta.
Well, maybe more money but a better life? I would hate to live in the Mac.

Join the club that thousands of us has made over the years...

Props for them not sticking around and becoming UI or welfare dependant, but what they have done is not really different from anyone else on the east coast...

Just the way it is unfortunately...

Agreed. That place can't be good for quality of life. Is the air even breathable in Fort Mac? Surely there must be better places to live.

Their first impression of the northern Alberta boomtown is positive.

"We love it. Very friendly; we're very happy," says Angeline. "This place was built by people like us. They came with nothing, looking for a better life, and they remember that."

This is a fairly garden variety story. Not exactly The Grapes of Wrath.

In my early years, I did something similar three times before finally settling in the Calgary area on the fourth try. I don't think I'm that unusual.

It's critical for any economy for labour to be transportable. The world needs more people like them, willing to pack up and go where the jobs are.

One difference in the 2000's versus the recessions of the early 1980's is that more households are two-person incomes. One person may be unemployed but the other person is settled into a career . . . . . which makes the movement of labour more difficult and creates more stresses in the economy.

Good for them. Again, not too unusual though.

Human history in a nutshell: If where you live cannot sustain you, move somewhere that can.
