That's a tad dramatic.

Sometimes people check up on others from their past - friends, family. Heck, it makes more sense to see how your ex is doing as (in most cases) you were really close in the past, compared to some distant relative or high school friend. Sometimes you don't feel like striking up a conversation and facebook is there for a quick look.

Obviously there's a big difference between a "I wonder how she's doing.." and obsessively following someone's life.

Kind of unrelated, and have to be kinda non-specific.

But I web-searched an individual working at a local company that a friend worked at (this was pre-google days). He said the guy seemed fishy. In fact his first day, he said it seemed odd that he showed up in a cab, and had all new clothes like he just got out of jail or something. Well one night when he was over watching the game, we did a web search on him. Turned out him and his ex wife kidnapped and tortured a prostitute, and spent a couple years in jail. That wasn't as shocking as the fact that he managed to work there for 8 months, before anyone figured it out.

If anyone does look someone up before a date, a word of caution that some of the information could be outdated. For example, after we had been together for a while, my girlfriend told me that she facebooked me before our first date. I had recently moved from Edmonton to Calgary for school, but my facebook still said I went to U of A. She almost didn't go out with me becuase she thought I lived in Edmonton and was looking 'short-term' (It was about 2 weeks before university started up again).

Moral of the story is, the information you find might not actually be true or up-to-date.
