The official story is that he's physically unable to perform his role due to his age, but every Pope gets old at some point, and he's the only one to resign in the last 600 years, so I don't think anyone is buying that.
I wonder how long it will take for the real story to come out.

Before he became pope he was the main man tackling the internal issue of child molestation, my guess is because of all the legal cases opening closed church documents world wide that they all land on his doorstep as that is what the previous pope wanted.
This might be the first big step in blowing the full lid off the systemic child abuse that has been hidden and kept from the public for so long.

Considering his former job was to shelter pedo's (I mean investigate them), it might be related to that.

According to oddsmakers (yes, you can place bets on this), this guy is the early favorite to be the next pope.

The Pope has proved his credentials as a good Catholic - by pulling out before finishing the job.

Wow. I didn't know that a pope could resign. I thought they had to keel over to be relieved of the job.

Darn, I was hoping they would just do the "Weekend at Bernie's" thing like they did with the last Pope.
I think people are looking too much into this. He's 85 years old, so I'm inclined to think he just doesn't feel up to the task anymore. The fact he isn't all that popular like John Paul II was, probably made the decision easier for the Vatican.

I know what you are getting at, but to be the first in 600 years to say, "Ah, screw this, I am going home!" doesn't bode well for his already tarnished legacy

Pretty hard to not keel over if you've been assassinated.

I definitely believe based on his past that Ratzinger protected more than a few child molesters. The truth is probably pretty close to coming out, so unlike another child predator protecting monster, Joe Paterno, the Pope is getting out ahead of time rather than when its too late. His reputation will still be ruined beyond recognition in the end though.

December 2012- Pope Benedict starts Twitter account.
February 2013- Pope Benedict resigns.
Coincidence? Those Twitter trolls are only a half step up from YouTube comments..

I guess he has probably done something horrible that the church has to take a stance against. My guess he has slept with an adult woman.
