Just to make sure: next week airs the halloween episode, right?
BTW, the ratings were quite good at 3.9m and a 1.9 in the 18-49 bracket. That's pretty good, they only had more total viewers once in season 3 and the 1.9 is a big jump from the 1.3 they had in the season 3 finale. That's solid numbers when you consider the "death slot" with ratings monsters like Big Bang Theory and American Idol airing at the same time.

The two storylines were worth it for Leonard's line about Inception.

The intro made me wonder how I could ever stand shows with laugh tracks...

I didn't think it was as devastatingly terrible as others may have thought. There was a more of an in your face type of feel to some of the recurring gimmicks. But I don't think that made it that much worse
Being that it is the premiere, they could have just been trying a bit too hard. I laughed at some of Troy's lines that were still true to his character.
I think its too early to tell if this is as big of a departure as those 2 articles suggested.
My biggest worry is that of the 2 best supporting characters (and actors portraying them) On television. The Dean and Chang. The Dean is best utilized as a secondary weirdo and enabler of the core cast. I can't think of too many good things that would result from a story arc of him moving in next to Jeff. Hopefully I'm wrong. Chang has always been crazy and they were running out of ways to show that. I hope they don't flub this seasons version of Chang.
After early reviews and this thread I was ready to forget season 4 existed.
After watching the premiere, I will probably tune in next week.

I thought it was the weakest episode of the series so far. It felt like a jumping the shark moment purely because of how forced everything seemed, Jeff trying to get all the balls, Annie's weirdness, the breaking of the fourth wall, Abed's alternate reality... it seemed like they took ever little quirk from every character, concentrated it and then shoved it all into one script hoping the audience would like it. It's a common sign that the writers don't know what to do with the direction of the show because it doesn't flow naturally.
I would reference you all to Weeds and Arrested Development where near the end of the show the storylines became a caricature of what they used to be, that moment where it becomes formulaic. Hopefully it turns around, but this smells a lot like Arrested Development season 3. Or take a look at the Big Bang Theory, a show that used to have a unique premise that has become a formulaic mess that is limping along using the same cliches and formulas that made the earlier episodes unique. Obviously we will all watch it to the end because the earlier seasons were strong enough to shine through one bad season.

not a single laugh. easily the worst episode of the series they've ever done, and by a wide margin. i'll give it a few more episodes, but if they're like this then Community will die a sad and lonely death

Finally got around to watching it. I didn't think it was that bad. Nothing special, but wasn't terrible.

Agreed.
The worst episode by far was the "Schmitty" episode. That episode was insanely annoying.

The video game being made by fans can be found here: http://projecthawkthorne.com/.
It's pretty neat, imo. Very much unfinished at this point. You can be an impressive variety of characters - or versions of characters (ie for Troy you can choose regular Troy, Troy and Abed Sewn Together, Quarterback Troy, Spiderman, Sexy Dracula, Paintball Troy, Pant Suit, Ripley, Orange Paint, Night Troy, MJ, Library Nerd, Kickpuncher, Detective Troy, Constable Reggie, Christmas Troy, Childish Gambino, or Bumblebee Troy).
Easter Egg from the first episode this year is the two shirtless Unicorn men, who are from Gay Island in the game.

Halloween episode today. Don't think I'll be able to catch it live.
Not that I'm overly confident.
As long as we don't have any more "Greendale Babies" or Abed TV, I won't have to massacare a small city.

for me, it was the Christmas episode where Abed thought everybody was made of clay. IMO worst Community episode ever by a very big margin ...

Good Halloween episode. Pretty standard for Community to have those go well.

It was definitely a lot better then episode 1. Wasn't too busy or anything so it flowed good. A few solid lines as well but still not as good as I expect from an average Community episode.
A couple things that bug me:
- Abed... They're really messing with his character. He's too weird so far.
- Metajokes were way too obvious this episode.
The secret dogs part was funny. Same with the end bit.
"Did it work? Are you tall?"
