Is where you can check all the health inspections. It looks like Nellie's Cosmic Cafe hasn't been updated though since the last entry is from June 2012 and was only for hand-sink violations.

Break the Fast Cafe has a very recent inspection though. Looks like they have trouble keeping their food refrigerated and stored at correct temperature.

The kid and I have eaten at the Kensington location but it's been a long time. I'm curious to know what closed them down.

Nellie has had trouble with AHS many times now. So now they are really shut down?

It seems it was company policy.

How do you spot a tourist in Calgary?
They're eating at Nellies /zing

Calgary's Nellies Cosmic Cafe shut down for sewer backup

Alberta Health Services has shut down Nellies Cosmic Cafe on 17th Avenue.

AHS spokesperson Bruce Conway says a sewer backup was discovered during a routine inspection.

"Everything is fine as far as food," he said.

The restaurant is working with officials to remedy the problem.
Ok, so apparently it's a sewer backup & not related to anything the restaurant was doing. Bad PR for Nellies considering what happened in 2010.

Yep. Damn Lonely Planet guide book. They usually give decent restaurant recommendations, but they must have been paid off by Nellies.

Nellie's has long been a favorite place to start the day, catch up with friends and attempt to quell a hangover. Awesome big breakfasts, bottomless coffee and funky style are the hallmarks of this 17th Ave stalwart. Nellie's is a growing empire these days, but the original is still the best.

I don't know what qualifications her staff had, but I think everyone in restaurants, who handles food, should have passed a recognized course in food safety and sanitation.

While that is a nice thought, there is far too much turn over in the kitchen industry for that to ever happen.

This wasn't an issue with food service, but Nellie's was closed due to a sewer backup.

Quote:
A sewer backup has temporarily forced the temporary closure of a popular Beltline eatery.

Provincial health officials ordered Nellie’s Cosmic Cafe at 1001 17th Ave. S.W. closed after discovering the problem during a routine inspection on Wednesday.

“There wasn’t an issue with the food service, but anytime there’s a backup like that, (a restaurant) has to be closed,” Alberta Health Services spokesman Bruce Conway said.

Never heard of Nellie's until we ran across the one in Kensington, wandering around there one day.

Yeah, no kidding. This is just short of guys wandering in and out of the place wearing orange bio-hazard suits.

"Sewer Backup, Temporarily Closed for Repairs" would have sufficed.
