I think Schultz is a good Dman and a great pickup for the oilers terrible blue line. That being said, how many right handed shots do they think Team Canada is going to put on the blueline?

Pietrangelo, Weber, Doughty you have to imagine are locks, Letang has a really good shot, and Seabrook and Girardi have a chance as well. I just don't see Schultz even being considered, aren't him and Letang very similar players?

Kieth - Weber
Doughty - Pietrangelo
Staal - Girardi
Letang

That's how I would like to see it. Still, 5 RHD is almost unheard of. Makes me think that Phaneuf might get a legitimate look for the #7 spot....

doubt it, the TSN's and Sportsnets have been totally seduced by the Oilers so called rebuilding plan.

Its funny they refer to them as high flying and offensvely powerful and yet the Oilers 5x5 are one of the worst offenses in the league, and overall are still pretty pitiful.

They hype them every year yet we see the same thing, a decent start followed by a no struggle fall to the basement, yet they come back the next year oh my god the Oilyaz are going to be so awesome this year, its their year with all of that offensive high powered talent that can't score and yeah.

So its no surprise that Pang jumps on the Schultz band wagon, and granted Shultz has done some nice things offensively like throwing the puck on the net, that's great. But his overall game and his physical strength are far from Olympic level and unless a miracle happens his development cycle to become a top 6 on a Canadian team is more likely 5 years from now and not one, and with some of the young defensemen that Canada has longer.

We heard this hype before the last Olympics with the Flames potentially putting 3 defensemen on team Canada, it shows how good these guys are at hockey.

But then again that idiot Lowe is involved with the team so you never know.

Sports media needs to develop narratives that capture viewers and play on their emotions.

Oilers are the ideal team too fashion an age old narrative of transcendence. That's why they get so much attention is that for the casual viewer, who the networks are in an intense competitive environment to capture, this narrative stirs their viscera.

TSN and others could care less about you. You're hooked, you're watching hockey on their network no matter how biased they appear. TSN is going after the casual viewer who has the option of either watching CSI, or Canada's handyman, or the hockey game. With no compelling narrative, those viewers are less likely to tune in.

Letang is better offensively and much, much better defensively.

Schultz high end might reach Letang's level but even that is doubtful.

How good would Schultz be if he was on the Flames right now....hard to even contemplate.

He'd be a really good forward and a really tired and crappy defencemen. Just like he is now with Edmonton.

Our problem is not puck moving defensemen or generating offense from the blue line.

The Flames problem is defensive coverage and physical play in our end. Schultz doesn't bring that to the table.

He'd be behind Bou, he'd be behind Wideman, he'd be behind Gio, at eh very least, when he's played Butler has been pretty good and his defensive play is improved.

He'd probably be a bottom pairing guy on the flames or a pp specialist,

I'd rather spend our time right now developing Brodie, and we need at least one banger like Sarich.

There's no doubt that Schultz is getting a ton of time and opportunity because the Oilers blieline isn't all that great, he probably made the right decision in signing with a team with low expectations and poor depth so he gets the opportunities that he's getting.

But is he the next Letang or the next MA Bergeron, I don't know.

I think he'll be a good offensive defensemen, but I think his offensive numbers are hiding other things that need to be worked on.

I would agree with most of this, I laughed when Pang said he would add him to the team. I told my buddy that I was watching the game with that power play specialists do not make the Olympic team.

But I think the somewhat irrational dislike of the guy by some is funny. I imagine at the end of the day he is going to turn out to be a Kris Letang, someone who leaves you wanting more in the defensive zone but is a solid 50 point guy from the backend. The guy put up big numbers in college, big numbers in the AHL, and pretty good numbers in the NHL so far. Every step along the way it has been "Sure he did it in college, but will he do it in pro" and then "Sure he did it in the AHL but it will be different when he faces top NHL talent" to "It is only 10 games, probably just a flash in the pan".

In an objective world any hockey observer would take Schultz over Brodie, they are a decent comparable given that Schultz is only one day older than Brodie.

I can't wait until the next Flames game TSN broadcasts and Pang mentions Brodie for the Olympic team....

I would think on the big ice if he continues to play the way he has so far this season that Bouwmeester might get a look as well.

You guys are fools, if he was a flame we would all be stoked about his potential and current play.

I get a Mike Green - power play specialist vibe out of Schultz when I watch him. He's not winning any awards 5 on 5.

I wish I had the time like you guys to watch every team and worse, watch so many oilers games that one can make an assessment on the capabilities of one defense man.

Ftr, I don't think Schultz is going to make the Canadian olympic team ever, but this thread screams butt hurt towards an offhand comment.
