Something I want you guys to watch for in this video. Recently Maxis added a few additional behaviours, Sims turn off their lights when they go to sleep, turn them on when they wake up, and when it is raining they light their fireplaces at home.

Something you won't see in this video but I think is cool. As an example of the way the simulation works, coal power plants actually burn coal. You can get it by mining it or importing it from the global market or a neighboring city. You will see when you watch the coal power plant, it burns a load of coal, produces power, and a puff of smoke comes out the stack. That puff of smoke tells you that the power plant is working but not only that, if you see that the puffs of smoke coming from the power plant are getting smaller, it is running out of coal (less coal burned, smaller puff of smoke, less power produced). Lots of systems work like this in the game and I'm excited to see more of it.

this one shot from the first album gives a good representation on the 2x2 city size:

I think it's big enough. I'm looking forward to this game. The cities don't have to be huge in order to have fun.

Spoiler!

Edit: I'm assuming that is 2x2 and the dotted line is the city limits, although I can't be sure.

here's another:

Spoiler!

Yup, that is the city size. There is also an option in the menus to get rid of the dotted line so the borders of your city are not so clearly demarcated.

I didn't have an issue with city size in beta. I think in the future I would like larger city plots but it sounds like that probably will happen in the future anyway.

That looks tiny to me. Maybe it's just because I used to Calgary, but that doesn't look like a city to me.

Ordered my new computer, basically entirely for this game, although my MacBook needs replacing anyways. Thoughts on this unit?

For a scale of reference, the area of a city in SimCity would fit inside Central Park in NYC.

10GB of Ram seems excessive.

I would definately add a video card - if so make sure there are standard expansion ports. I would also go to MemX and pick up an OEM W7 and wipe the computer as soon as you get it and put a fresh copy of W7 on.

Other than that it doesnt seem bad. 10GB Ram is what really stands out. Not sure the type or speed of RAM

No need to buy a new copy, you can get downgrade rights from Windows 8 to Windows 7.

However, I would just use Start8 rather than go through that hassle.

Ignore this advice; for even the most dedicated luddite, there really is no good reason for doing this, and plenty of reasons why not to.

1. When consumer targeted OEM PCs are delivered with a newer OS, it becomes an incredible pain in the ass (especially for normal end-users) to try and downgrade them to previous versions, much more so than a business targeted machine. You'll spend most of your time fussing about trying to find drivers and if you have issues, you're on your own.

2. If you really need the classic Start Menu, use Start8.

3. If you have software that is not compatible with Windows 8, upgrade to Windows 8 Pro and run your program in a Windows 7 Hyper-V virtual machine instead. If it's a game, wait for a patch or check the forums for workarounds. But there really isn't much that's been released in the past five years that doesn't work with Windows 8.

That city looks smaller then Lethbridge, I'm hoping that they make more space available in the full release.

I guess I'm used to the older SimCity where you would fill the App with thousands of buildings and millions of people and once you got it built you would spend time rezoning areas to pack more people in.

Everything to this point has looked outstanding , but a 2x2 city size is a big limitation

There is nothing wrong with Win 8. Add Start8 as mentioned and you will have no problems. It's more secure, faster and looks nice. No reason to buy W7.

I kind of like the smaller city size, lets me focus more on quality and detail than getting lost in a big city where I don't know half of what's wrong.

That's actually a good point. Many new machines come with secure boot, which makes it 5-10x harder to even start an install.

Secure Boot, UEFI... plenty of stuff that most users aren't familiar with. Windows 7 supports UEFI but if you've never used it before and the system uses UEFI exclusively, it's not as simple as inserting a DVD and hitting any key when prompted.

This video card is no good? To be honest this whole setup was picked it for me by a friend who knows far more about computer specs than I do.

It's not the greatest video card in the world.
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_list.php
Not the worst either, but it's certainly down there.

My only worry is that most OEM machines do not have the sort of power supply to handle a better video card than what they're equipped with from the factory. So you might need to buy both a power supply AND a video card. So budget for that.

But if that's the machine you want, then get it, and try Sim City V on it. Who knows, it might end up being just fine.

If you can look past the fact that it runs a lesser AMD processor, you can get this machine from Memory Express (http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX42479) that has the video card power you need, at the cost of some CPU power. There really isn't much that AMD can touch Intel on where mid to high end processors are concerned.

Or just build something. I'm sure if you wanted, a number of us on here could put together a spec sheet from Memory Express that would do what you want it to do.

I don't think I'll be even bothering with it when it comes out. The tiny map size is really disapointing and limits what I want to do with this game. What's the point of a city creating sim game when you can make a city that's a super dense central park?

This!

I was in the same boat as you oilers_fan and after talking a buddy into helping me put it together I got what seems like twice the machine for around the same price. I was looking at a similar computer (tiny bit more $) with the same video card and going off Torque's link it's ranked at 396th, where the video card I end up putting in my set up is ranked 12th.

Why purchase something if you are just going to end up putting in another $150-200 on a video card and/or $40-60 in a new power supply when you can get get it right from the start.

As someone who just went on a big hunt trying to find a decent computer at a decent price pre-built it's tough. They seem to build to be attractive to a regular consumer because they only look at RAM, HD and GHz so they put an excessive amount (ie 10GB of RAM) to appeal to that but it usually lacks in other areas like the video card.
