When I was young, I never understood why we needed the Rover.

A little different story than the rest as it was I that gave my kids the misconception.

I have twin boys. When they were 2-3 years old I had bought them NHL placemats. I taught them the teams and everyone was amused when I would point at a logo and they could tell me who it was in their adorable little kid voices.

The Calgawy Fwames, the Tamba Bayz Wightnings, the St. Woois Bwoos.

The hilarity ensued when I would point at the Oilers logo. The Stinkin Oiii-wers. To them that is what they were called.

However it wasn't so funny when we were in McDonalds and they pointed at a scruffy angry looking dude who was about 6'6" 270 lbs wearing an Oilers cap behind us in line and started shrieking, "Wook dad, the Stinkin' Oiiii-wers, the Stinkin' Oiiii-wers!" over and over again while I tried to shush them up as he gave me the angriest staredown I've received so far in my life. He was not amused as most and I was just happy to get out of there without suffering a brutal beatdown.

Haha Stinkin Oiiii-wers.

Ha ha yeah, after a while I figured it must stand for Habs cause that's what people called them but I still didn't understand why they would put a nickname on their jersey.

I remember thinking that every section of the dome was a different rink for a different team.

Also thinking they played hockey on top of the dome haha

The goalie was the one calling icing when he raises his arm to alert his teammates.

Felix "the Cat" Puckman was pretty good.

Growing up in Ontario only ever seeing leafs games, I grew up as a young child actually being told by family that the leafs were "Canada's team" and that you had to cheer for them if you were a good Canadian. When I got to an age where I wasn't so influanced by family and could think on my own, I started following more teams and then I just couldn't stop following the Flames.
I do remember one of my uncle's telling me that the leafs never won the cup because they were the best team so they didn't need to, the winner of the Stanley cup would always be the second best team of the year after the leafs.

I used to think they painted the blue line, red line, logo's etc. on top of the ice and had to be repainted after the game because it would wear off.

I thought he players' bench was the penalty box...and there were 15 guys serving penalties all the time...usually for high-sticking, because all the players raised their sticks in the air after a goal.

I thought when teams relocated, all the players lost their jobs and the new city just hired all new guys from off the street or something.

Oh, remembered another one.

I really got into the game in 86 when Calgary went to the finals against Montreal. I remember telling people that I was happy even in Calgary lost because Canada would win.

I thought the Canadiens were a team for all of Canada. Lol.

Figured it out by the time we played them again in 89.

I used to think that playing for the Flames was a job you could just walk in and apply to with resume and everything.

-I thought the Pittsburgh Penguins were incredibly evil because of their black jerseys.

-I also thought the New York Islanders were a good team because they beat said penguins in the '93 playoffs. I admired them so much for defeating this unspeakably evil team that when my Dad took my brother and I to Jersey City to buy hats, I insisted on an Islanders hat. All this without ever seeing them play a game

-At my first live Flames game, everyone was chanting "Freeeeeddddiiiiie" near the end of the game. I thought the crowd was cheering for Freddie Brathwaite, I had no idea they were heckling him. I even joined in!

-I thought all sports had fighting, and didn't understand why they were such a big deal when they happened in other sports.

-During a brief stoppage in play, I told my coach I was going to get a shutout. I thought he was crazy for telling me I shouldn't say that word before the game was over. I just learned a few days earlier what that word meant, and I was stopping absolutely everything! Why would he say something like that? ...After the next five shots went in, I understood why

I moved to Canada when I was 10. didn't speak much English and learned by reading the Calgary Herald sports section ( back when it was delivered in the afternoon). The Flames kinda sucked back then and the players would complain that they couldn't catch a break. First I thought that they weren't able to stop on the ice. Then I thought they weren't getting enough breakaways.

Silly immigrants...

I thought the saddledome ice was perpendicular to its roof.

I thought sitting in the nosebleeds would make me dizzy and I was afraid if I leaned too far ahead in my seat I would fall down to the ice.

When I heard Peter Taglianetti's name on the radio (assume when the flames played winnipeg), I thought it was 2 different guys (Tagli and Eddy), and I asked my parents if they always played together.

"Taglianetti takes a slapshot from the point", wow these guys work great together.

I had a buddy who thought games were pre-determined, like WWF.

As for myself, its gotta be because of Blades of Steel, but I thought you only got a penalty if you lost a fight. That was back in the days of all-time heavyweights like Probert & Twist where they'd just go off on each other. So I figured the reason they went so hard is because they really didn't wanna get a penalty.
