Default Faked Disappearance May Lead to Mischief Charges

That 'missing' Lethbridge man is getting himself in even more doo-doo - legally. Police say the 'disappearance' was intentional. The 'NE hotel' he was found in, is the Travelodge in behind Universal Ford, just off of Barlow. Hope they do charge him for this.

Police are investigating whether or not to charge a Lethbridge father with public mischief, after his mysterious disappearance last week.

Matthew Robillard was reported missing by his family on Thursday, after he failed to arrive at his job in Picture Butte. His abandoned vehicle was found in northeast Calgary later that day, with the passenger-side window smashed out, keys in the ignition and the motor running. Officers also found the 25-year-old’s wallet and phone inside the car.

The shocking discovery sparked a massive search for the young father, as police feared foul play might be involved. He eventually showed up at a northeast Calgary hotel around 3 a.m. Saturday morning.

Lethbridge Regional Police have confirmed that Robillard’s disappearance was intentional. They say he left on his own volition, and took deliberate steps to cast suspicion on his disappearance.

Sounds like somebody who might need help and support. Don't be so quick to judge when you don't know the whole story.

Sure he probably needs some mental health help. But he should still be charged. *shrug*

I agree with all of the above. Most likely needs mental treatment but doesnt mean he shouldn't be charged for costing tax payers money!

I'm not saying he should be treated with kid gloves! I'm just saying that kind words of support do much more good than ridicule!

However, if it turns out that he was just pulling a prank and he is not having difficulties - then to the gallows with him!

I'm a little confused as to how merely commenting that police think he faked the whole thing is ridicule. It's fact. And why do any of us need to give support to shenanigans like his?

What stresses or changes in this mans life caused him to run away? Why did he to to make people think he is gone or perhaps dead?

Put yourself in his shoes first and see how you would want to be treated.

Put myself in his shoes and pulling a stunt like that, I'd expect to be catching #### left, right and centre - and rightfully so. If I want out, I'm no shy retiring wallflower - I'll just bloody tell you I want out. Not turn it into a big ass drama and continue to deny my culpability in the matter.

Just looking at this from another angle; this could have been a man who felt he had no way out. So instead of doing a murder-suicide, he came up with another plan. He left, and made it look like something may have happened to him.

Not saying it's "right." Just that it may have been the best option available. He probably was only thinking of trying to keep his wife from thinking he left on his own accord.

However, your thinking rationally. Now try the opposite.

You're depressed and nobody around you cares about what your going through. You are thinking about hurting yourself and maybe you've told some people, but again, they don't care. At least, that's what you believe because you are depressed. So you think to yourself, "Who would care if I suddenly disappeared." Perhaps his mother or father consistently call him a "######" or his wife tells him he is no good.

Maybe he hasn't had a good night sleep in years and didn't get help because he believes men don't need help, but eventually he just snapped.

Word down here is that a lot of his uncle's cash (2 million) had gone missing. People have been putting pieces together.

Loss of money linked to disappearance - Robillard charged.

Quote:
Police in southern Alberta have charged a man with public mischief after it was learned that his disappearance was a hoax.

Matthew Aaron Robillard's relatives called police when the 25-year-old Lethbridge man failed to show up for work Jan. 31 at a Scotiabank in nearby Picture Butte.

His car was later discovered with a smashed window in an industrial area near the Calgary airport. His keys, wallet and phone, along with a pack of cigarettes, had been left in the car. Robillard, who is a Morman, doesn't smoke.

Investigators found Robillard, a married father of a six-month-old baby, a few days later at a Calgary hotel.

"This was a ruse that spanned multiple jurisdictions and diverted valuable police resources away from real victims and actual crimes,” Ian Sanderson, acting inspector for the Lethbridge police criminal investigation division, said Tuesday in a news release.

"It’s a concern to us that someone would take these steps and cause police to continue an investigation when no crime had occurred."
Quote:
Investigators believe Robillard’s disappearance was precipitated by a significant financial loss and allege the abduction was staged to make it appear as though he had been blackmailed to account for the loss.

Robillard was released on a recognizance and is scheduled to appear in court April 8.
