I've been to the last 2, but this year is going to be a new animal with the increased number of days and (I assume) increased number of stages. Overall the last 2, and other festivals I've been to at the same location, we're pretty good. The ability of the organizers to adapt to the demands of a bigger festival has me a little concerned, but hopefully they've learned enough the last few years to make it work.
The biggest issue is going to be transportation. There are four options, ferry, bus, car or walking.
The ferry is great on the way there, especially if it's non-peak, as you get a nice 15 minute or so ride up the river and nobody really cares if you spend that time drinking. The ride back is a completely different story. Either be prepared to leave a bit early or spend a long time in a line to get on a packed ferry. It's also a boat full of wasted people and it has steep stairs that are easy to fall down (not that I ever did that

).
I've never done the bus, but it sounds miserable. I'm assuming car isn't an option so I'll leave that out.
That leaves walking, which is likely the path I'll choose this year. It's not a short walk from the closest subway, but I'd imagine it'll take less time than it would to wait for a ferry and the ferry terminal is a few blocks from transportation itself. There is a foot bridge at the far south end of the island that isn't always open, but if they keep it open later than usual for the concert it would be a good option. There's also the footpath along the vehicle bridge which will drop you a little further north in Manhattan.
Let me know if you have any other questions I can attempt to answer.
