Similar to this, I often misheard "pad save" as "bad save" and thought the PBP guy was a jerk for saying the goalie wasn't good.

I thought the same about Jeff Shantz because he visited my elementary school.

I thought Luc Robitaille's name was Rick Luba-tie.
I thought Ed Whalen and Buckshot (from Buckshot and Benny) were the same person.

Not about the game but...
I convinced all my friends that people rollerblade on the Saddledome roof.
They all bought it.

My son calls kipper kiprosauce. Women think its the cutest thing ever when he has his jersey on.
Women - "ahh who is your favorite player"
Son - "kiprosauce"
Women - "oh he is so adorable"
Works better than a basket full of puppies.

I didn't see a game from beginning to end until I was 18 (USA Olympics 1980). Didn't see my first NHL game until I was in my 30s, didn't see one live in person until my 40s.
But somewhere in my early teens I had heard enough hockey talk to hear the phrase, Power Play. Everyone seemed to have a Power Play and that was the only play I'd have every heard of. Was it the only planned play in the game? What made it so special, I wondered.
I imagined some kind of fancy alignment of players and then break into some sort of action.
It simply never occurred to me that it was a penalty leading to one side being shorthanded. Football, baseball & basketball didn't do ANYTHING like THAT...

Definitely had that ice depth one that people have mentioned.
I used to think that penalty killing was a way to have the penalty time reduced by being on special good behavior after getting in trouble. This was only 'confirmed' to me when I asked my parents for a clarification of what penalty killing meant and they couldn't tell me.

When i was a little girl, my dad had access to the Forum Club, and players would hang out there after games. Since I would see the players there, watching TV, eating and having drinks I thought they all lived downstairs at the forum. I'd ask my dad to take me to Rogie's house.
I also thought the ice was really thick.

Moving over here when I was 3 and seeing as how my parents couldn't speak english let alone teach me anything about hockey, I had almost zero understanding about any of the rules besides get the puck in the net. I didn't think of any theories to try and explain them, I just never had any clue.
Also, because of when I was growing up (I was 6 when the flames made the playoffs for the last time in '96) I had very little interest in the Flames or hockey, but for some reason I really, REALLY wanted an NHL jersey. I remember me and my dad drove to some jersey store and he let me pick out a jersey and for some reason I picked an Oilers Fuhr jersey. No idea why. My next jersey after that was a random jersey that my mom found on sale somewhere. I think it's an old Kamloops Blazers jersey but I actually didn't figure out which team the jersey was until literally right this moment when I started to think about it.
Whats the jersey with K surrounded by fire?
It wasn't until '03 that I started watching the Flames for real and the only reason I did was... Yup. The new Jerseys. Well that and the fact that they started playing the games on tv more and more. I picked quite the year to start though!

When I first heard Paul Kariya's name during the 1994 Olympics I thought he was a Korean player and had no idea why he was playing for team Canada. I thought it was going to be weird when Canada eventually played Korea.

Only two things come to mind:
One - The warm-up. I had no idea such a thing took place. Even after the first two or three live games as my dad liked to get there about one minute before puck drop. I thought any on-ice interviews (which were rare back in the day) were done earlier at practice or something.
Two - At my first live game I was ASTONISHED at how small the ice surface was. For some reason on our ancient old Magnavox (or whatever that horrible TV was) the ice looked gigantic. Football sized at least!

I used to listen to the Winnipeg Jets games on the radio and I thought Peter Taglianetti was two people: Tagli and Eddie. Thought they were linemates.

I remember going to my first live game, and Gretzky came to town with the Kings - and they lost and I bawled the whole three hours home, because I thought Gretzky won every game he played in. Crushing for such a young boy.
