I'd love the Flames to pick Marko Dano ... simply because I remember his father playing three years for my hometown club here in Austria towards the end of his career. Was a tremendous goal scorer and a big fan favourite, would always stay on the ice and sign autographs and take photos with the fans after home games ... seeing his son being drafted by the Flames would be crazy had a good WJC tournament as well.
Basically every ranking I've seen has the same top 5 (Jones, MacKinnon, Barkov, Lindholm, Drouin) and then everything else is different.
That is pretty typical I'd say. Consensus is often only on the top few picks. That the top 5 are fairly consensus at this point indicates the depth of the top end of the draft.
Love what I saw from Drouin at the WJC. Jones looked absolutely great as well, even better than Erik Johnson did at the same age I think. MacKinnon wasn't as impressive but I have no doubt about his top prospect status. Saw a few nice things from Lindholm. Didn't see enough of Finland to judge Barkov at all.
I've been looking for awhile now, but since I can't find any info. elsewhere, I'm doing what I should have done in the first place and ask here:
Does anyone know for sure if the draft this will still have the same weighting system? Dreger stated on Twitter that weighting system may remain, but that's it.

According to the NHL Entry Draft wikipedia article:
Quote:
Starting in 2013 under the current CBA, all 14 non-playoff teams would have a chance to grab the first overall pick using the same weighting system format, which eliminates the rule where a team can only move up four positions in the draft.

If the Flames end up outside of the top 6 thereby not being able to draft any of the following:
Jones
MacKinnon
Barkov
Drouin
Lindholm
Monahan
I would be in favour of selecting a defenseman depending on where Calgary picks. I'm not high on any of the other forwards except maybe Erne. Instead, any of these dmen would be great additions to the prospect ranks:
Pulock
Ristolainen
Nurse
Hagg
Morrissey
I'm just not sold on Shinkaruk, the Russians, or Domi.

Pulock or Nurse would certainly be interesting. If they pick somewhere between 12 and 20 and again, I'd love them to take a look at Anthony Mantha. Really good size (6'4) and 63 points in 45 Q games this year.

I'm not sure I like Mantha too much. He's a quick strike player and seems disinterested for much of the time. He's big, but only uses it to get in the prime shooting spots quickly without being in the hard work areas too long. Most of the time he's a perimeter player with questionable work ethic and defensive instinct. I've seen him score and vanish for much of a game.
Then again, Getzlaf was considered the same and look how he turned out.
Does anyone know if the new lottery system is changing in regards to the number of picks that are actually drawn? For example they currently only pick the 1st spot...and the remaining picks just go in reverse order.
While I know they are opening up the top spot to all 14 non-playoff teams, and eliminating the drop 4 spots rule....are they still only picking the top spot?
I think it would be great if they picked all 14 spots.....then there could really be some movement between the top 14....and the incentive to tank would be even further diminished.

Latest info I've read says its the same as before except that the winner moves to #1 instead of moving up 4 spots.
This year is more of a win win for the Flames. We can suck enough to get a top five pick and luck out with either Barkov or Drouin. Or we make the playoffs and end with with a solid D prospect like Ristolainen. This is a really really deep draft.

What a year to win the lottery!
Been searching everywhere for concrete info on this, but it sounds like it's as you described. Winner gets 1st and then the rest are based on standings. Personally I like the NBA's model that picks 1-14 are determined by lottery. Stops the tanking on purpose routines "some" franchises like to follow. But with the luck we have had so far this year, I could see us having the highest chance of 1st overall (25%) and the Oilers will barely not make the playoffs and have a 2% chance of winning and will still get it.

I believe on the McKenzie mid-year prospect rankings, Bob indicated that the NHL would adjust the probabilities slightly allowing the worst team in the league a greater likelihood of getting the 1st overall pick (likely similar to the NBA model). I do like the idea of any team in the lottery getting the first pick; as long as Calgary's not bumped beyond 6 if it were to break down that way.
