Default NFL player anti gay comments

The comments stand alone as reprehensible, but the apology made me laugh out loud.

It is terrible when the thoughts in your head do not reflect the feelings that you have.

Not that this would be okay in any city but for a player playing in San Francisco to say that is just crazy.

He should've just owned up to the comments. I hate how politically correct everyone has to be nowadays.

"I don't do the gay guys man," said Culliver, whose Niners play the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. "I don't do that. No, we don't got no gay people on the team, they gotta get up out of here if they do.
"Can't be with that sweet stuff. Nah…can't be…in the locker room man. Nah."

I can't even fathom why anyone would take offense to anything this dude says. He has obviously been hit one to many times in the head as his remarks barely make sense.

The one aspect people are glossing over is that he was being interviewed by Artie Lange, so there's an aspect of him trying to play things up to be funny or entertaining. It doesn't excuse his comments, but to me that context takes some of the sting out of them.

It's no secret that plenty of athletes are opposed to having gay teammates. As backwards as that may be it's the reality. The good news is that when someone voices that opinion it's no longer met with 'well of course', but with anger and a demand for accountability.

Yeah these are easily the two least likeable teams I can ever remember getting to a Super Bowl. Alex Smith might be the only guy I actually want to see win, and he's a backup now.

I am not sure what he was suppose to own up to though, say "Hey I do not like gays but watch me on Sunday when I slap Patrick Willis on the ass after a big hit"......

Although saying "Hey, I am a bigot and proud of it" would have been an interesting response as well.

I would just like to see someone after they say something stupid, one time, just give this quote, " Yes, I said those words and if I didn't believe in them, I wouldn't have said them."

I hate the backpedaling...

Especially since he didn't even write that apology. He speaks and tweets like an illiterate fool, and then comes out with this succinctly worded apology.

He would've been better off saying "I wish I hadn't of said what I was thinking because now I have to deal with it and I would prefer not to."

I thought maybe he had posted in the 'Unpopular Opinions You Hold' thread.

The 49ers official response:

Quote:
“The San Francisco 49ers reject the comments that were made yesterday, and have addressed the matter with Chris. There is no place for discrimination within our organization at any level. We have and always will proudly support the LGBT community.”
http://www.csnbayarea.com/49ers/49er...sue-statements

Jim Harbaugh's response:

Quote:
“We reject what he said. That in no way reflects how the organization feels, and how most of the players feel. His impact going forward on the team is something we'll think about. He will learn from it, he made a statement, and he pledged to grow from it. We hope it will affect him in a positive way going forward.
(emphasis mine) http://www.csnbayarea.com/blog/ray-r...re-49ers-focus

Jim Harbaugh doesn't suffer fools gladly. Braylon Edwards complained. He was cut. Brandon Jacobs whined about his role. He was cut. It remains to be seen what will happen to Culliver in the long term, but I can see the 49ers taking some CBs in the draft.

Jed York, President of the 49ers, has tried to be an NFL leader in anti-bullying and pro-LGBT issues. This has embarrassed him and won't soon be forgotten, especially at a time when they are trying to sell seasons tickets to a new stadium being built 40 miles further from San Francisco.

I want to see a 49ers ad with him begrudgingly dressed in drag at a gay club, sitting at the bar, staring into his drink... "In the NFL, one mistake is all it takes."

Turn the PR sin into a PR win!

Why was the journalist allowed to completely set this player up? He completely railroaded him. Probably the most loaded question in professional sports.

Obviously Culliver is an idiot and responded to the question like an uneducated moron (which is exactly what the journalist was looking for),but you can;t answer a question like that without getting crucified some way or another.

Cheer for the murderers or the homophobes?

I guess I'll go with the homophobes?
