Is Boychuk comparable to Michael Grabner, claimed off waivers at about the same age by the Islanders. Grabner ended up with over 30 goals that year.

May be worth a look, but does he really add more right now ? Maybe if Bartschi has an injury that is significant.

That's what I am thinking. If Sven needs to go on IR then put in a claim for Boychuk and use him in Sven's place until he returns, if he plays well maybe we make a trade to make room, if he doesn't we put him on waivers and hope he sneaks through and send him to Abbotsford.

he has been converted to a left wing but you could always try him back at centre again

I was assuming Bart is on IR and Cammy is traded for O'Reily since we aren't getting him for nothing.

Boychuk is the victim of a numbers game with the Hurricanes. Bringing in Semin and Staal added two additional top 6 skaters to the lineup. To earn a spot in the top nine he needed to beat out Zac Dalpe and Drayson Bowman and thus far has not been able to get into the lineup except for the season opener. Both Dalpe and Bowman have been great so far, therefore to get Boychuk minutes the Hurricanes are trying to sneak him back to Charlotte.
At the end of last season the Hurricanes tried him in the top six with Staal but Boychuk eventually lost the spot to Tlusty. He's been given opportunities to play in the top six but he has failed to put up any numbers.
He's a tenacious little player but not physical. He gets in on the forecheck but to expect him to crash and bang is too much. Boychuk can't carry a scoring line, but he could be a nice complementary winger. My issue is with Sven, Hudler, Cervenka, and Cammalleri the Flames are small up front and Boychuk would be another diminutive forward. It will be interesting if he gets claimed.

in a year or so, I suspect Boychuk will be more closely compared to Zach Hamill

The Canes lines are currently:
Tlusty-E. Staal-Semin
Skinner-J. Staal-Dalpe
Bowmn-J. Jokinen-Dwyer
Westgarth/Nodl-Brent-LaRose
Ultimately it was Bowman with his size and physical play that likely pushed Boychuk out of the lineup.

I want the Flames to pick him up because he's young and skilled.
However, I don't see where he fits into the lineup. He's less proven than Backlund and certainly less proven than Stajan, who are good 2nd/3rd line centres. Those are the only 2 guys he could replace up the middle.
He doesn't fill the 1st line centre role (obviously) and he's not a 4th line centre.
In the top 9 we have,
Glencross - Tanguay - Iginla
Hudler - Stajan - Cervenka
Baertschi - Backlund - Stempniak
I like the looks of it this way.

After reading some of the posts on CP about Boychuk, i don't see a place for him on this team right now. If he is a winger or has to play top 9 there is no room. Hell theres barely enough room for Sven right now.

If Bart is injured than I would totally pickup Boychuk and look to trade Cammy + picks for O'Reilly. Instant centre depth or Bart replacement on left wing if hes injured in Boychuk and a potential first line centre in O'Reilly. If Bart isn't injured then I guess the team just got more competitive for playing time. I think its win-win trying to get both of these guys.

Makes sense to me if the flames can get a decent young player with upside for free they should put a claim in. This team still lacks decent players in the 22-27 age group

Why would Colorado trade for Cammy's contract? They would just spend the $5 million on O'Reilly if they were looking to spend that much per season.

His biggest thing isn't his grit. He is a skilled player. At least he was in the WHL, and apparently he is putting up points in the AHL as well.
The grit we're talking about is his ability to still be successful despite being a little smaller than most.

Are they at an impasse because they think O'Reilly is not worth what he is asking or because they can't afford it. I am not clear on why they haven't signed him? If they can get a proven forward plus picks for a guy that they aren't certain is the real deal yet, maybe they do it. Assuming that's why they haven't signed him yet.

I think we should totally pick-up Jamie Lundmark... er, I mean Zack Boychuk.

Cammy has not been proven as a 6 million dollar a year forward for a couple years now though.

Maybe they do it with the picks maybe they ask for Backlund who knows. I don't think I would trade Backlund though. I still have faith in him becoming a second liner. Who would you trade for O'Reilly?

I have a feeling they are in full rebuild mode. They are comfortable giving their young players a chance to grow together, so I doubt they would want anything outside of Sven, Brodie, Backlund from the Flames lineup.
