I think it was to make the gamble a little less if you wanted to get a player through waivers but it was iffy that someone might pick them up. Kind of like a waivers "mulligan" to be used once per year.

Seeing how this team tried to sign him to a 2 year deal in the offseason, that is (very unfortunately) highly unlikely.

Flames will hopefully put a claim in for Boychuk, exactly the type of risk this team needs to take.
Especially if Baertshci is out for a period of time. Place Sven on IR and take a shot at Boychuk.

Had an idea!

Boychuk was a pretty dynamic player back in the day for the Hurricanes. Local kid, so I'd take a chance on him for sure.

We need to take a chance with these kind of players. Young but skilled. Tampa took a shot with Conacher, it's workimg out wellfor them so far. Heck, we did it with Gio.

I cannot understand why they would put him on waivers. Is he that terrible now?

There was talk before the seasoon started that they were going to try Boychuk on the top line. I guess that did not pan out. He has grit and Feaster has been looking for that. Can pot a few goals and plays center.
Flames should put in a claim. I guess they could send Begin down. Would anybody pick Comeau off of waivers if he was out on it?

Actually i'm still puzzled. Florida put him on waivers yet we had to trade Montador for him. Was it because we had too many contracts?
|
How many waiver claims or projects have the flames made or taken on since that move? Success rates have to be far below that of a mid to late round draft pick panning out.
The Flames likely made the trade instead of claiming him because of an internal budget or contract numbers. As I mentioned earlier, it may seem like a good idea to claim a player but there are far more implications then it simply being a "no risk move" as many like to say.

If the stars aligned we would be set at centre for years.

I dont know if there really is a down side to picking him up. If anything it makes guys like Jackman and Comeau expendable.

Begin has a two way contract, so why not try to claim Boychuk? Granted two totally different types of players, but a skilled center who's 23 years old is worth a shot I'd think.

The Flames need to sign a few high profile prospects shortly - contract numbers aside, there is still an organizational budget they need to consider.

Players the age of Boychuk get waived quite often and turn out to be decent NHL players. Boychuk is not being waived because there is an intention to get rid of him, but rather because they want to send him to the AHL. More than likely he is being squeezed out because of someone returning from injury, much like the situation we will be faced with when Babchuk returns as the only defenseman that is not subject to waivers is Brodie.

Completely different players I think. Horak is better defensively and Boychuk is better offensively. I think Byron is a better comparison to Boychuk, although I think Boychuk is better than Byron by a decent amount.
I also don't get why everyone is bringing up Comeau. It's like people fail to understand that Boychuk is a completely different player, he is simply not capable of filling a 4th line role and he can't play a physical game. Boychuk needs to be utilized in a scoring role, Comeau does not.
I like Boychuk alot, but we simply do not have space for him, we can't afford to give up what little grit we have for him. However i do think whoever claims him will be very happy if they have the ability to use him in a top 9 scoring role.

I had the opportunity to meet Zach last summer and he's a real pleasant kid. That'd be cool if he wound up on the Flames. I used to watch him play Bantam and Midget cause I had a couple friends who played on the same teams.

A few have mentioned Boychuk as a centerman. He's taken 19 faceoffs in his NHL career (73 games). Doesn't sound like he's a centerman

I don't think I would describe it as grit, I would agree he is tenacious, but his size stops him from having an effective physical game. Which is why I compared him to Byron, he is the same way, they are bulldogs out there, but just lack the size to be effective with it.

Glencross Backlund Stempniak
Baertschi Cervenka Hudler
Begin Jones Jackman
