I think the exacerbating part is they left the kids hanging there.

I think a prank like that needs to have the punchline revealed immediately.

Parent: oh, dont eat the danish, there are bugs in it.
Kid: *gasp* really??
Parent: no, just kidding.

Not...

Parent: oh, don't eat the danish, there are bugs in it.
Kid: *gasp* really?
Parent: yep, see you in a couple hours, bye.

These kids will eventually grow up and be the kinds that will steal and eat food from the fridge at work, despite my warnings that I have pre-licked or spit into all of my food items, because they don't believe me.

this thread reminds me of foggy memories I have of Arrested Development when the dad is teaching them all a lesson... there were a couple of them if I recall.

I suppose I'm going off topic but when my sister and I were young my parents told us that when you were born you only had so many words to use and when you used them all up you couldn't talk any more.

My sister and I both believed it for a long, long time and I suppose we were somewhat stressed about it.

I look back now, laugh, and realize the genius of it.

Daradon I didn't believe the cops were watching me into my twentys, but I did believe that I had dodged a bullet as a child :P I realized that I wouldn't go to jail for what I did, but to upset the police Chief enough for him to call us back must have been pretty serious and I felt like a jerk for doing it.
