Here's an actual question.

I live in Calgary, but have a home in Arizona. Can I buy a gun down there? I wouldn't mind having one for days when I'm bored and want to head into the desert to do trap shooting, etc. Do I need an Arizona drivers license?

In AZ you can buy them anywhere with no ID, I think. Gun shows, out of the trunk of someones car. I think you get one if you open a bank account or buy a new set of tires.

I think you might have a tough time doing that without having a Canadian Firearms Licence.

That's just an assumption though, I really have no idea.

This is the real issue. You admit that this is "really freaking stupid" but you sure as hell aren't going to speak out about it. Do you not see how absolutely ridiculous that is? You're okay with something that you consider that stupid simply because of some ridiculous stand you feel you need to take on guns. This is why parts of America will always be backwards on this issue.
People do stupid crap all the time and its legal for him to do it. I personally wouldn't do it myself.

Check the laws there, I've seen Germans buy long guns here in Alabama but they won't be able to take it home.

So you think it's okay because it's legal despite thinking it's "really freaking stupid"? Do you not see how this makes no sense?

You answered your own question. Aren't you former military? The AR-15 is a semi-auto rifle without the selector switch to make it a fully automatic assault rifle. Are you saying accuracy makes the gun an "assault" rifle?

It is not an "assault rifle" in the military definition of the word.
But based on the legal definition of "Assault Weapon" it most certainly is.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal...lt_Weapons_Ban

You'll notice that the AR-15 was specifically mentioned in the legislation.

Can you clarify the legal definition of an assault rifle then?

...Because you can get a semi automatic long rifle with a wood stock that operates the same as an AR-15. People think AR-15's are scary because
-they play too much COD.
-its black, and therefore scary.

It still shoots one bullet with one pull of the trigger.

So Aurora and Sandy Hook were both done with the killer squeezing the trigger with each bullet he let loose. They must do trigger finger exercises to be that quick.

I don't believe there is a legal definition of an assault rifle, but the general one is what you stated above, that it would have selectable fire.

As for what you could do with a long rifle and a wood tock, sure it operates the same, but it most certainly cannot be used the same.

There is a big difference between a full barreled long rifle with a heavy stock, and a short barreled, super light AR with a 25 round magazine.
I know which one I could do a lot more damage with.

Yes that is correct and finger exersises are not required to make that happen.

You've created a definition of assault rifle that makes any rifle available to civilians, by definition, not an assault rifle. Fully automatic weapons are banned pretty much everywhere.

I'd submit that a derivative of a military assault rifle with minimum modifications to make it legal to sell to the general public is still an assault rifle.

As an example, this is a Ruger Mini-14. It is semi automatic with a wood stock and you can even get them with 18.5" barrels, which is fairly short. You can mount any optics on them. The only difference is the AR-15 looks scary because it is black and has a more modern look.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruger_Mini-14

The AR-15 is the modern version of the musket, and Americans need them. The ignorant masses are drenched in hysteria over these things. Outside of the Aurora mass shooting they are rarely used to murder people, because they are not concealable like a handgun is.

So my point was that it's the short barrel, huge ammunition capacity, and to some extent the light weight collapsible stock (or pistol grip) that makes it an assault weapon, and thus different than a typical hunting rifle, and your response is to show me a rifle which has a short barrel, and a huge capacity, can be fitted with a collapasable stock, or pistol grip, (which if you did would classify it as an assault weapon under the previous ban), and has been used by multiple police/swat/militaries.

Maybe that one above isn't exactly an "Assault Weapon", but it's darn close, and with a little effort, it can be just as easy to use in that manner as an AR.

So yeah, great example there Mikey.

My point is that there is a pretty broad definition of what an assault rifle is. I would also wager that your average ignorant gun grabber would say that the AR-15 should be banned simply because it looks meaner than the wood stocked Ruger Mini-14 pictured above, not knowing that they operate the same way.

Anyways, here is some more hypocrisy from the US government.

http://www.examiner.com/article/dhs-...assault-rifles

"It's a bid by DHS to purchase 7000 select fire (read: automatic) AR-15 rifles. If you look at the specifications, the government is requiring them to be select fire meaning there's 3 options not 2 like on normal AR-15's you buy in the store. These have safe, semi, and auto options. They also must take 20 and 30 rounds magazines, have rails to put accessories, and a fixed pistol grip and durable vertical grip. The latter to are both deemed 'military features'.
"DHS and its components have a requirement for a 5.56x45mm NATO, select-fire firearm suitable for personal defense use in close quarters and / or when maximum concealment is required.""

So here you have a domestic agency (DHS)...buying 7 thousand true assault rifles with full automatic capablility.

I'm trying to figure out the problem with a law enforcement agency buying weapons. Not seeing it.
