He's been voted the most overrated player in the NHL several times through multiple years in polls of his peers.

Million dollar arm, five cent head.

Breaking Lupul's arm with his slapshot is prob the highlight of his season so far.

I'll always remember one of his last HNIC games as a Flame. He'd made some bone-head defensive plays that were being analyzed in the Behind the Mask segment and Hrudey stated that the kinds of mis-reads Phaneuf was making weren't anything he was going to grow or work his way out of; you can't just learn to think the game properly.

Phaneuf is the anti-Feaster/Weisbrod type of player. They covet high hockey IQ as a top trait.

Disagree

Defensive coverage can be learned if you are in fact willing to learn. That's always been Dion's problem, he's not coachable.

When assessing the trade, you can't really say that it was a good trade even if Phaneuf becomes the worst player in the NHL this year, because you have to look at his perceived value when he was traded. That was very high so Darryl Sutter should have done a lot better than Stajan, Hagman, and Ian White.

I'll take Hrudey's opinion over yours.

There's only so much you can do with dumb.

Can't believe it's already been almost three years since the trade.

Unreal.

Because if you pair him up with a rock steady defensive-type Dman like a Regehr it works wonders?

He's 2nd in the league averaging nearly 28 minutes per game with a rookie opposing him. Dion has some warts on his game but when a guy plays nearly half the game every game for a team that isn't very good it doesn't take a rocket scientist to conclude that his +/- is going to take a hit.

You talking about Buffalo's 5th defenseman playing sheltered minutes because he can't skate anymore? Rock steady is kind of an aptly description seeing he's a borderline pylon now.

I would argue that Dion's perceived value at the time was quite a bit lower than most Flames fans thought. That's not to say that they couldn't have found a better deal.

I think he meant the Regehr of 3-4 years ago that Dion played with.

On the other side of the coin he plays hard and can be tough to play against which is a trait management covets

This gets missed a lot when talking about dion... He's nowhere near the skater he used to be, and those leg injuries really derailed him. He used to be athletic enough to make up for his mistakes, but now that his mobility is sub par, he's really getting burned. And the worst part is, his style hasn't changed. He still thinks he can do everything he did when he was twenty two.

Having read Comeau's recent paper on relativity, I disagree.
