[USELESS FACTOID] 6 famous people you may not know are engineers
There is a fair percentage of people on here that are engineers, so thought I would just post this interesting article here of some people who actually practiced engineering before becoming famous. There are some others too listed in the comments sections, eg) Dolph Lundgren, Frank Capra, Herbie Hancock, Mike Judge, etc.
Quote:
We all have talents and some of those talents outshine others. Take a look at six well-known, even famous, people who have an engineer’s mind and skills, but who have been acclaimed for talents other than engineering.
The following six people range from Hollywood, to politics, to music, and to comic strips. Plus, we’ve tacked on bonus list of five more people who studied engineering or a sister science/technology field but never practiced the craft.

Bonus: 5 more people that were almost engineers
The following five people studied engineering or a sister science/technology field but never practiced the craft.
Tom Landry: The famed NFL coach studied industrial engineering at the University of Texas, Austin.
Rowan Atkinson: Mr. Bean himself finished his degree in electrical and electronics engineering at Newcastle University before getting his Masters in engineering at Oxford.
Brian May: Although he’s an astrophysicist, May is most widely known as the guitarist from the band Queen. As a guitarist he uses his home-built guitar, "Red Special."
Ashton Kutcher: As a University of Iowa student, Kutcher was majoring in biochemical engineering when he was discovered and his acting career began. He’ll be playing Steve Jobs in the 2013 movie iJOBs.
Cindy Crawford: Before she was a supermodel, Crawford studied study chemical engineering at Northwestern University, which she attended on scholarship. She dropped out to pursue modeling full time.

Any engineer I've ever met is usually very quick to tell me they're an engineer and is very proud of said fact. This list must be false.

Jeremy Clarkson is a Doctor of Engineering.
Of course, as Richard Hammond is quick to point out, it did just "arrive in the post one day".

The first thing I learned when I started in Computer Science was that I was allowed to hate anyone just because they were in the Engineering complex.

Totally unrelated to this posting, but I have 2 friends, who don't know each other, who recently both quit managerial jobs to go drive trains for a living.
Is there some sort of shortage of engineers that I don't know about?

Once you get enough seniority to get off the spares board, it pays very well.

That's not true, I'm not that quick to tell people I'm an engineer.
It usually takes me a few minutes to tell them about the triathlons I do, so it takes a while to get to the engineer part.

If they didn't complete their degree and then acquire the required 4 years of work experience, they are not ACTUALLY engineers and must not ever refer to themselves as such.
Sincerely,
APEGA

Perhaps not so much in Chemical Engineering, it would be close to that ratio in Electrical Engineering. 3% female

Nope it's to make sure everyone else knows how much homework they have and that yours doesn't even compare.
You chose it, stop whining.

Nope, it's APEGA now. Geologists and geophysicists have been grouped as geoscientists.

As someone who hasn't graduated yet I am not allowed to call myself an EIT. Instead I have to use Trainee Engineer or I believe Student Engineer.
These things matter.
