Default Garage Door Repairs?

CP,

My mother's garage door, about 25 years old, had the torsion spring snapped rather violently today... At least I think it's called a tensioner spring

Can anyone on CP recommend an installer who can fix this for a decent price and with some solid workmanship?

Thanks all!

I have had the boys from action door (299-0340) over at place a few times. I was satisfied.

As an aside, I have been told that fiddling with those springs is not something that should be done by an ammeter.

I have read that as well... 5 minutes on google show the hardest part of replacing the torsion spring yourself is actually finding someone to sell the spring to you. Most places require your business license. I guess a spring under huge pressure + me + 6 pack of beer = missing limb.

Thanks guys, I will fwd the info onwards... Any more suggestions for good door guys, keep'em coming!

Alberta Spring Works fixed mine a few weeks ago - I think it's more of a 1-person operation but the guy seemed to know his stuff and had the door fixed the next day.

Amazing service, my spring needed replacing(after 19 years) they came in replaced it very quickly. It has a nice price tag to it but one week later they called again to ask how it was going. Then one month later they did a follow up and asked the same question. Great service!

I had the fastdoor guys come when my old style obsolete spring broke a couple of weeks ago, they were very good and were able to patch the spring and get the door working again. They quoted me $1300 plus tax to replace my door with the new style, which is less than I thought it would be.

My spring just went boom, I think I'll upgrade the door at the same time, since it is falling apart.

Thanks for the referrals above, although geterrdone.com instantly loses my business (go to their website and find out why). Ugh, absolutely terrible.

I'll give fastdoors.ca a look.

I was very happy with fast doors price and quality of workmanship.

They also use top notch hardware.

If replacing door and garage door opener (mine went bust this morning), do you recommend buying the garage door opener on my own, or would the company doing the work look after everything. As I type, I guess it's personal choice with chance you get a better deal yourself...

fastdoors provided a new opener and installed it. iirc the price of the unit was reasonable.

I see this thread is back up to the top. I figured I'd offer my review.

We used fastdoors.ca to install a new garage door last summer. They came over, measured the door, gave me a great quote, and installed it the next day.

It was fast, efficient and painless.

I had a few questions about 2 weeks after install, and they answered them all quickly over the phone.

I'd highly recommend fastdoors.ca

Less then a year ago i had to replace a snapped garage door spring, called at three or four places that told me it was going to be well over five hundred dollars and that i might need cables and such and this was without them even looking at it. Finally i found and called Stampede Overhead Door, they were awesome. Courteous, knowledgeable, professional and it was only around two hundred bucks even though i kept asking them about certain upgrades but they told me i didn't need it and to save my money.

I actually had them come out again last week because my door sensor's weren't working, the garage door would only shut if i held the button down. The day i finally called i wasn't in the best of moods and just wanted to make an appointment so it wouldn't be my problem anymore but the guy on the phone was calm and even made me laugh, he said that he would feel bad about having to charge me to send a guy to my home when he could probably talk me through the repair to do myself.

He had me try and few simple things but they didn't work so i set up the appointment and the guy they sent over was great, took about 30 minutes and he even replaced my button which was cracked after having to hold it down for a week but he didn't charge me a cent for it. It really is a good company so i highly recommend them, if you call and get a machine, just leave a message and they will call you right back.

Just another high five for Stampede. One of my springs broke and they came out next day, replaced both and total cost of $262.50. Done in about 1 hour.

Has anyone had the problem where you hit the button to close the garage door and the door goes down a couple inches before stopping and going back up? After a few attempts it will close normally. Is this due to the spring or something with the actual mechanism itself? This problem doesn't happen every time I open or close the door but it seems to happen a couple times a week.

Does the light on your opener flash when this happens? Usually, when this happened to me, it turned out that the units that make the beam across the bottom of the door opening are starting to get out of whack, so check that. Also, sometimes the time of day makes a difference if the sun is shining on the beam units.

I've had that happen and it was just a matter of adjusting the "down force" setting on the door opener. On mine, the force wasn't set high enough because I had wanted it to be very sensitive to small bodies getting caught under the door. When the door "jiggled" a little bit after first pressing the button to close it, the rebound effect caused a backwards force on the opener, making it think that it was hitting something. It didn't happen every time. An eighth of a turn on the right adjustment knob and it works perfectly now.
