Man, Salvation is one of my guilty pleasures I guess or I'm just a huge Terminator geek. That movies was actually pretty darn enjoyable. I thought it was really good performances from Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, Anton Yelchin and Bryce Dallas Howard. It was much much better then T3.
If I had to rate them..
The Terminator - 8.0
Terminator 2 - 9.5
Terminator 3 - 5.5
Terminator Salvation - 7.0
7/10 isn't exactly glowing but it had a lot of good things going for it.
I'm similar to you, I would never want T3 to disappear simply because it was a terminator movie.
The Terminator - 8.0/10
Terminator 2 - 9.0/10
T2 Directors cut: 10/10 (It plugged a couple glaring plot holes)
Terminator 3 - 7/10 (Still a good popcorn flick)
Terminator Salvation - No ranking, I refuse to watch a Terminator film without Arnold.

It's hard to rank that, it had some amazing moments and some dreadful ones.
Bryan Austin Green as Derek Reese and Garret Dillahunt as the T-888 were both great though.

I'd give it a shot.

A lot. I believe it is about a half an hour longer. But the big thing is, they explain why T800 starts to develop emotions/learning... whatever you would call it. They show a scene where Sarah does surgery on the T800's head and removes his processor (completely disabling him) and altering the CPU chip to start learning. It is really cool, and you get to see Linda Hamiltons real life twin in the scene too, when they do a cool mirror shot.
I believe the scene at Dyson's house is a lot longer, and they have more dialogue about the future.
There is a bunch of additional footage of whats happens in John's step parents house when the T1000 is there after he hills the step parents. Really cool scene where it is inspecting Johns bedroom, learning every thing it can about him.
It includes an alternate ending which shows Sarah as an old grandmother, and it adds nothing though. In fact it would mean T3 never happened.
It is definitely worth the watch. I think it is on Netflix actually.

You're not going to find a bigger Terminator fan out there, but I want nothing to do with a 5th movie.
Let it go. Yes, Salvation wasn't great and left a sour taste but unless James Cameron is attached a new Terminator will never succeed where the first two did.
No clue if that is confirmed or what.. but according to this he is involved.
I actually liked T3, the scene with the crane was awesome. It was even better because Arnold put up 1.4 mill of his own money when the director wanted to cut parts out, insisting they go all out.
But sweet jesus is this the real music they used? I can't remember..

James Cameron gets credit on all Terminator projects as a writer because he created those characters. If it's actually something he's written it will say (Screenplay) or (written by) after his name. In the Terminator 5 page, like T3 and the TV show it says, James Cameron (Characters).
Rambo 4 was almost like a comedy it was so over the top with the violence. The final .50 caliber scene is absolutely hilarious. If a new Terminator is like that, with ridiculously over the top violence, I think it could make for a fun movie. But I'm not even sure where they could go with a storyline here.

That makes sense.
In Arnolds book he mentions T5 and has been talking with Cameron.. He says how Cameron doesn't want to direct it, but has been giving him advice on where he thinks the next movie has to go. Something about how the next movie has to be about the T-800. Maybe it is getting back to basics and where they were most successful.
Maybe this is the movie that will come full circle and finish it all off.

I'm a huge Terminator geek so I am excited for any new movie that starts with the word Terminator. I even own all 4 on Blu-ray and I have a pretty small Blu-ray collection.
