I wonder if this is some sort of Canadian "Oceans 11" thing where some Al Pacino or George Clooney looking guy faked this information breach to get 500,000 Canadians to volunteer their info and then have it compromised. That would be something....

I have yet to find out if mine is compromised. For some reason, I'm not as concerned as I probably should be.

What's the procedure for figuring out if your info was compromised? I presume your SIN and name, but I hope they don't ask some auxiliary questions like what was my address and phone number 12 years ago or whatever.

Just my SIN when I called. I don't think they even confirmed my name.

So, what's the deal with these class action lawsuits popping up?

If you're impacted, is it worth looking into? And if so, how? Do you just contact one of these law firms and add your name to the list?

While I am happy that my S.I.N. was not compromised, I am left wondering how it wasn't if I had a student loan from '96 to '01. Did the HD in question only possess information from a a portion of students who had loans out at the time?

I think it was people who actually applied during that time period.

Because my loan wasn't taken out until 2007, but I would have applied in 2006.

my information was compromised. I spent over 2 hrs on the phone with equifax and transunion to put an alert on my account every time there is a credit application.

anyone else have more information about whether or not to provide my information to the lawyers for the class action lawsuits?

You don't need to provide any information to any lawyer, unless you want updates about progression of the case, ie you won't miss out on any claim to settlement if you don't sign up for one.

Fricking... I heard about this awhile ago and was thinking it only affected Quebec for some reason. I should probably check but waiting on hold tomorrow at work is gonna drive me nuts. ARG!

I called and was not on the list.

I was a bit disappointed, but I did manage to get the guy to put me on the waiting list for the next security breach.

I called yesterday and am not affected.

However, a good friend (and coworker) of mine is.

She spent 2.5 hours on hold with Transunion to put a flag on her file to deter identity theft.

I'm affected. Now to check transunion. Should I check the other credit agency too?
