Still buzzing off of last week’s surprise shows at the Dakota Jazz Club, Prince’s new rock ‘n’ roll trio—guitarist Donna Grantis, drummer Hannah Ford, and bassist Ida Nielsen—stopped by the Current to share a new track and chat about how they got together with the Purple Yoda.
There has been speculation from fans that the new all-female trio is affiliated with mystery Twitter account @3rdEyeGirl, which has been sharing all kinds of bootlegs and other goodies from the Prince camp, but the bandmates denied it. Instead, they say that their new lineup is an “untitled” work in progress, and that we can expect to hear a lot more from them in 2013.
First up? This track, “Screwdriver,” which has been teased in a few places online and is now getting an official release. Prince and his trio played it live on Friday, and it was a good representation of the punchy, down-and-dirty rock that they were whipping up that night at the Dakota. In the recorded version, the track has a bit more studio sheen (and synthesizer). It’s his first above-the-boards offering since his fall single “RNR Affair.”
Have they gone in a "pop" direction (like Liz Phair)?
Ya.. sort of. Well ya they have. I think there are still a few songs with the old folk feel to them.. but definitely a pop flare to them.
But this is what, their 7th album now? I am happy with the music they have left in their wake and am perfectly fine with them going down the pop road..

We’ve got confirmation that Vampire Weekend’s third LP is complete (see artwork above) and set to be released on 5/7 (5/6 in the UK), and we’ve heard one song from the album (“Unbelievers,” which the band played on Kimmel), and now: another. Whether “Arms” will appear on LP3 remains to be seen (though I’d bet heavily on it), but the band played the song at Sydney’s Metro Theatre, and we’ve got audio of the performance via VW blog Team Vampire Weekend. I don’t notice any major aesthetic overhauls here; sounds like Ezra is still listening to Graceland pretty regularly, and the Afrobeat rhythms have been a staple of VW’s sound since LP1. Still, a smooth, expansive, gorgeous sound, which is why one listens to Vampire Weekend in the first place, no? Check it out for yourself.
The Flaming Lips are actually terrible though. I saw them at Sasquatch in 2011 "performing The Soft Bulletin in its entirety". They played maybe 5 songs and Wayne Coyne blabbered about the most useless garbage for the rest of their set. The intro to the set on the other hand was incredible, easily the greatest intro for a show I've ever seen.
Ugh, I am so tired of that clown. I can't wait for that band to go away.
hahaha, touche.

I was at that show as well and I totally agree with you. Aside from the intro, it was awful. One of the worst shows I have ever seen. I have also seen them perform "Dark Side of the Moon" and it was really, really bad.
