So where are all the "NHL Insiders" on this? Only Gillis and the other gm know about it? Come on Dreger et all, get to work.

During the Canuck/Oiler game, he also said during an intermission interview that there were many potential suitors but it was much more difficult finding one, "in a place Roberto wants to go to."

I couldn't believe he was actually saying that publicly.

GMs are so focused on the immediate salary cap concerns that they undervalue the tail risk of a player not working out and causing significant salary cap issues in the future. I wonder what a GM's discount rate effective is.

I tend to agree, but at the same time there's usually a way out of all but the absolute worst contracts. The players value will take a big hit (as we're seeing with Luongo) but it's not like they're immovable.

And in the examples where a player does become simply unusable, a shorter term contract wouldn't have really alleviated anything. Look at Drury, Gomez, and Redden; none of those deals were particularly long but all of them are going to be bought out.

Gillis is full of hot air. I bet there is no other mystery team. He is attempting to play the 2 other teams that have been interested against each other.

teams we wouldn't expect?

Sabres - Miller has only 2 years left on his deal and his cap hit is higher than Luongo's

Toronto should be patient... don't panic and overpay on a Luongo deal. I actually think this Scrivens could be a decent goaltender. Only 26 years old, and has had an oustanding SV% every year in every league he's played.

His worst SV% was a .903 in 12 games with the Leafs last season. I don't think that is bad at all for a rookie goaltender playing behind the Leafs defense.

Thats exactly the way Toronto should play it. The better Scrivens does the less leverage VAN will have.

As for Gillis claiming to "have a deal in place. Just waiting on the other team to sort things out".

BS

He's waiting for Schneider to step up and own that #1 spot. I would have to imagine the thought of trading Luongo, a perennial regular season AllStar caliber goaltender, would be a little unnerving after your supposed "#1" let's in 5 goals on 14 shots in your home opener.

Schneider didn't even get a chance to redeem himself in game #2. Luongo won't be going anywhere until Schneider proves he can be a top goaltender in the league.

I have always been impressed with Scrivens, I think he can be a serviceable goalie for the Leafs.

Always? Big fan of his at Cornell? Or just his 12 games with the Leafs? People here jump on Schneider for not being proven enough to be a #1 goaltender and then proclaim a guy the same age with far less experience and worse statistics to be one?

What does he need to do in order to prove that, in your view? Play the full season as a starting goalie? I really doubt Luongo stays that long, but who knows.

Did I say he is a proven #1 goalie? I said they can be patient because to me Scrivens has proven he can be a serviceable goalie. There is a difference between being proven enough to replace Luongo who has been a top 5 goalie in this league, and being serviceable enough to be patient while making a deal for a goalie.

He has been good in his 12 NHL games, and was solid for them in the AHL.

I also think that Schneider has proven enough to be seen as a number one goalie and they are smart to try and trade Luongo for more depth.

Canucks fans sure are defensive about their goaltending these days.

if there was a deal he would have made it, not talk to the media about making the deal...

Someone whispered in my ear and told me Pittsburgh made an offer.

That's a very interesting rumour and makes sense on certain levels if what Gillis is saying is true. Pitts would have to do something with Fleury so maybe they're waiting on a deal to move Fleury out.

Schneider should be able to redeem himself game #3 however.

Who would a Pittsburgh deal be centered around? Simon Despres?

Penguins make little sense to me.

They would want to upgrade on Fleury since they were not impressed with his playoff performance so they trade for...Luongo.

Luongo is a significant upgrade on Fleury IMO, rumours of Luongo's ineptitude are greatly exaggerated.
