My Canadian wife forced me to take up hockey so I could have an easier time of assimilating into the Canadian culture when she forces me to move to Calgary.
I set out to not only learn to skate and play myself but I wanted to start a whole group of zealous football, baseball, and gun lovers into a sport I was falling in love with. I had a small group of friends whom were easy to talk into trying out this ridiculously hard task with me. The rest of the guys I just recruited from various sources such as Craigslist just asking " Even If you just love watching hockey and want to give it a try... or hell even if you want to say youre a hockey player so you can get some puck bunny love ... Im starting a beginners team so get in touch."
I ended up getting 15 or 16 guys interested in giving it a shot. The big problem we had, besides not being able to skate or play with/catch pucks, was that for a lot of guys hockey was really to expensive. In addition to the league fees guys were having a hard time affording equipment for a sport they werent even sure if they would stick with after one season.
I made a post about our team on CP and mentioned a few of the problems we were having. The support I got was absolutely mind-blowing... A bunch of posters got together and found a way to meet up and give some old gear to help. Not 2 weeks later I had a huge box or two full of old equipment from Calgary that I could give out to guys in need.
A lot of guys just didnt make it past the first season , which is ok. They still love hockey they just werent physically able to play at any kind of level. I still to this day give gear away from that box when I see newbies or players in need. When the guys quit the sport they give the gear back, or when guys from my team or myself buy new gear I collect it and toss it in the box and I just keep recycling it. Hell, just last friday I was at a pick-up and a guy who was playing for the 2nd or third time wasn't using any elbows and gloves that were for 10 yr olds. I took his name and number and plan on taking him a pair of elbows and gloves from that box this Friday.
A few of the guys who I started with still play. Personally I still really suck at hockey but I am really good at talking trash from the bench. Anyway, I will never forget CP for doing this or the posters that sent gear to get some of these guys started. This is probably the main reason why I can take a lot of flak in the Gun threads bc I know there a lot of good people on CP regardless of what a few of those goons say in there.

Works good. Sure beats taking out the ironing board, that's for sure.
I won't mention that I actually GIVE Rico a lot of that computer stuff...

Cedar meter has been more than generous to me when he couldn't attend games. His tickets aren't in the nose bleeds either. They're amazing seats that are worth $162 each.
He's real generous and donated his tickets to calgaryboy when he came to Calgary.

I still say Aeneas should have been white-hatted for that.

Great idea by a CP member, and great support by the Flames fan community to wish the best for Jiri Fischer after his life threatening incident in 2005.

All these great stories about CP and it's memebers doing stuff for each other is great and all but the only thing CP has ever given me is a night out with Locke. Not sure it belongs in this thread though...

In September the Heat training camp started and just to keep my fellow CPers in the know, I regularly posted about what was going on down here.
Just before the Heat season opened, I got a PM from the sports editor at my university's newspaper saying they liked how dedicated I was to keeping internet strangers informed about what was going on with the Heat. He asked me if I'd like to be their Heat writer for the season and since I'm a journalism student, I ecstatically accepted his offer.
I got a media pass, I got to meet many people including Rob Kerr, Charlie Simmer, Troy Ward, all the Heat players, various scouts, everyone who works in the Heat organization, etc. I've been having the time of my life.
Then, about two weeks ago I get a call from the Heat asking if I'd like to work for them part-time. Again, in absolute excitement, I gladly accepted.
I went from a regular CP poster and journalism student to writing for a small newspaper (unpaid, but it's experience) to working for the Heat part-time (with room to move up) in less than 5 months!
All thanks to CP.

Oh come now, fun was had! Sure, we didnt exactly burn Vancouver to the ground, but the competition for that is fierce over there!

Dion is amazing.
When my son was born last year, I posted a pic of him on CP. Dion sent me a signature to use on CP. This was completely random and I just thought was really nice and cool of him.
Then when my son turned 1 this year, I messaged him to let him know, and included a pic of him. He promptly sent me back a new signature to use.
Anyway, I thought it was kinda cool and amazing. It's a small gesture, that makes me happy and glad to be part of the CP community.
