Default Ongoing US Mass Shooting Thread

5 dead, 3 of them children, in New Mexico

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/crim...icle-1.1243564

learned of this from someone in the US who wasn't upset about 3 more children dying because of guns, but because the article had the audacity to mention the term "assault weapon" and the Sandy Hook tragedy. he's more concerned with the media "demonizing guns" more than the fact that 5 more innocent people are dead, and this is from someone who i originally thought was one of the moderate pro-gun people i knew

His second amendment rights are more important than young innocent lives.

Ridiculous. How people can defend Automatic weapons is unbelievable.

Should we just ignore these insane gun deaths? You have a choice to ignore this thread if you don't like it.

I'm as anti gun as anyone, but this thread isn't needed & will go no where good.

Additionally this was a shooting in a home where the victims are likely known to the shooter, very different from the mass random shootings.

It's just sad that we have to make this thread.

Nothing is going to get done on guns because the NRA and the GOP are in bed together.

There was a scandal in recent months that involved guns - Fast and Furious.

The ATF started keeping track of young men in Arizona that would buy dozens of assault rifles and then re-selling them to Mexican drug cartels. Many wanted to arrest and prosecute these "gun-runners" but the courts (judges & prosecutors) wouldn't file charges against legal gun owners. So the program remained and these guns were used to kill American border agents at which point it became scandal.

Why wouldn't Arizona prosecute cases as requested by the ATF?
Likely because the NRA would have crushed their electability with their "grades" for elected officials - these judges are evaluated by the NRA for their gun-friendliness.

Judges aren't the only group judged, Congressmen are as well. The NRA "scores" their gun friendliness and campaigns accordingly.
The Republicans blamed the Fast and Furious scandal on Eric Holder (somehow), and the NRA scored the vote.

Nation[/URL]]The Republican-led House, acting in lockstep with the NRA, twisted the facts of the ill-fated gun trafficking investigation in Phoenix to complete almost every item on its political To Do list. It used the scandal to bludgeon and destabilize the ATF, the agency charged with enforcing the nation’s gun laws. It diverted attention from the ineffective gun laws that made the ATF’s job in Fast and Furious nearly impossible. And it emerged with a cherished talking point: that the gun laws on the books right now are more than adequate, and it’s only their enforcement that has flaws.
Why did the NRA score the vote?

Okay so is the news going to report every single gun crime committed in the US from now on? Seems like they weren't doing this before.

The local news was. For obvious reasons it is getting more national attention now.

And this thread is disgusting.

As far as I know they have always reported "multiple" deaths, the internet would crash if every gun crime was reported out of the wonderful USA though.

Well to be fair, several big news events involving shootings were discussed under different titles before this thread was born. It got to a point that it was just easier to put it all into one thread.

If the thread is that disgusting, it's just the result of what is going on down south. Or perhaps you'd like to see the whole forum filled with separate threads? That wouldn't look any better...

Sure, there may or may not be a few extra news items in here now, but the thread was born out of 'necessity' for lack of a better term. It's not the thread that's disgusting, it's the values and idiocy (regarding this topic) down south.

Why is it in poor taste?

Guns and possible gun control laws is probably going to be the #1 or #1A (with budget) issue in the US for awhile now, and it also exposes the far right wing part of the US as being a bunch of "They took err jerbs" characters from South Park. This issue will be everywhere for awhile.

Then call it a gun control thread. Lumping all mass shooting deaths into one thread likens the shootings to some sort of arbitrary, redundant and normal occurrence, which they are not. (Normal in the sense of acceptable, not regular).

Until there are policy changes (like Obama has proposed) and the NRA doesn't orient the conversation - these mass shooting are redundant and acceptable and don't each need their own thread.

And framing mass shooting as a gun-control issue is exploiting victims according to the prevailing opinions in Washington.

My expectation of Biden/Obama's proposals is that nothing of consequence will happen because Republicans won't for it and (since it won't pass) Democrats won't vote on it.

If America isn't going to act like these events are unacceptable, let's stop pretending they are.

That's kind of the point, it's looking at the US and seeing that it appears that to the NRA and the extreme right it is acceptable! Or at least a unfortunate byproduct of preserving this insane right to own assult rifles without any kind of check or review.

To me, watching the US over the last month I have started to feel like they are a broken society that can't be fixed. Awful education systems and widening gaps between have and have nots is creating too large a mass of extremists. Best proof if this, is the NRA and its support.

^^^ Exactly, why should we gloss it over when there is so little responsibility from the people it actually effects or the people who have the power to do something.

A lot of the anger in this thread is horribly HORRIBLY misdirected.
