Not within your region.
Why should the NHL take money out of Calgary's pockets? Because that's what would happen if they lifted the blackouts.

And without those regional blackouts the dome would be empty every night.
Just ask Bill Wirtz.

Sportsnet would still lose viewers of its pre-game show and Connected. These are all properties they value highly.
The Flames and Oilers wanted to offer streams within the market but Sportsnet would not allow it. It's a right they paid for.

Interesting. Leafs TV is the exact opposite - they stream games they have the rights to, but only in-market (and they will use those broadcasts for NHL GCL too, which is confusing, because that's only available out of market)
Here's a question - does a carrier like Shaw pay to carry a product like Sportsnet, in order to attract subscribers, or does Sportsnet pay Shaw to be in their lineup so they can sell advertising?
I've been trying to get my head wrapped around this for a long time.

It's also a property the NHL/Flames didn't value properly.

No. You'd need separate accounts.

Shaw pays a tonne of money actually. In the neighborhood of 4$ per month.
http://business.financialpost.com/20...he-big-losers/
Regional and national sports networks are making a tonne of money from these carriage fees. Do the math on 48$ per year for every cable and satellite provider in a region. Advertising is pretty much irrelevant in the equation now.

That was wishful thinking that became something more as people talked more and more. The NHL has said they have many partners in the deal and making it free wouldn't be possible.
I watched it on my Apple TV last year and it was enough of a pain in the ass that my wife won't allow it in our house again. We'd watch an entire game, and as it went into overtime the feed would freeze for 3 minutes, buffer, then cut to live (which would just be black because the game ended).
My issue is I can't remember when I upgraded my internet through Shaw... so I'm open to the possibility that's what happened.
edit: to the best of my knowledge, I signed up for Shaw BB50 around summer, so I wouldn't have tried it with GameCenter.
Also, interesting to note from the opt-in policy on the NHL's wesbsite:
Quote:
Alberta and Quebec residents who subscribe to NHL GameCenter LIVE™ will not be automatically renewed for the subsequent season. The NHL may email such subscribers to invite them to renew their subscriptions for the subsequent season. A subscriber from Alberta or Quebec must expressly agree to renew his or her subscription; otherwise that subscription will not be renewed.

I signed up for gamecenter because I think it is a good deal. Hooked up the account on my Apple TV. Tried to watch a game from last season but it buffers constantly. The ATV is hard wired and I have a 25mbps connection so I don't believe this is a bandwidth issue on my end.
Not sure what others have experienced.

The difference is in the broadcast deals. The Leafs and Canucks retained their digital rights in their broadcast deal. The Flames and Oilers sold theirs as part of it.

There should be a waiver that unless you're exercising the digital rights those rights fall back to the NHL. I can tell you that teams are leaving money on the table with these blackouts.

Does game center live on apple tv look any where near as good as plain old center ice? I was going to buy center ice but apparently you need some fancy HD reciever that costs around 200 bucks.

Many concerns,ps3 app and now, for us in Europe, it should be withnout any blackouts like last year, but today, there are 3 games with blackout statements here in Czech republic for me....Will try to sort it out, because i was told this week no BO for Europe. I am waiting for GCL chat to go online.......

Well it looks like the NHL is really trying to piss off European fans. There will be black outs in Europe however they obviously felt we didn't need to know so didn't tell us. I have just spoken to a rep who says that in the UK there will be black outs for all games that are on TV here. This wasn't the case last season. Furthermore we won't get the majority of the playoffs on GCL and none of the Stanley Cup finals because there is a channel with the exclusive rights to these.
Great way to welcome back your fans NHL!!
