It's good optics for Obama, who has to be seen as being proactive. It may give some level of confidence to parents and school officials. It may also act as a deterrent to some potential shooters.
Only time will tell whether it was the right move or not.

Apparently the NRA killed funding for gun research after the researchers they hired found homes with guns were 43x more likely to use the guns to kill family members rather than use those guns for self defense. Pretty sure that's a fairly good case for better gun control laws right there.

That's funny sh*t right there, best part is that guy is from Alabama too!
No doubt about the facts that homes with guns will more likely kill a family member. I'm a pro gun person as all of you know but it doesn't take a genius to figure that out. I would like to hear how many of those homes had safe's and if they were used but the children knew how to get into them.
Mine are all locked up right now and havent caused any issues, and I don't have an AR15 so I've got nothing to take. Also with that being said all this is doing is raising the prices of weapons and ammo to the point where no one can get them thus banning guns without actually doing so.
Pure genius
EDIT:
The NRA is dumb, and people who support them are idiots also considering they're just washington lobbyist just like AARP and are only looking out for themselves.

You know, I've been wondering about pro gun people these days, the smart ones. I'm wondering if they are noticing the types of people, celebrities, I guess, that are speaking out for more guns.
You have the NRA president of course, who I think is a complete moron, but you also get, Ted Nugent, Alex Jones and today John Rocker had this to say.
Quote:
Mr. Obama wants to severely neuter the Second Amendment and disarm the law-abiding citizens of this nation, a similar act of tyrants throughout the 20th century such as Stalin, Mao and Hitler,” Rocker wrote. “Absolute certainties are a rare thing in this life, but one I think can be collectively agreed upon is the undeniable fact that the Holocaust would have never taken place had the Jewish citizenry of Hitler’s Germany had the right to bear arms and defended themselves with those arms.”
|
If I were pro gun, I would probably at this point be looking around at the types of mentally unstable people I am in bed with and start to second guess my convictions.
I mean, are there any pro gun control people that are as crazy as any of these anti gun control people.

Not if ammo is so easy to reload or obtain from the 'black' market.

Shhh
I reload 9mm, 45, and .223
I can make a box of .45 230Gr FMJ for around $8/box of 50 compared to around $20/box of 50 (before the prices went through the roof) and it costs me about $6.48/box of 20 Brass .223 Vmax (good bullets) compared to if you can find them at $25/box of 20 brass cases.
I was able to get a box of cheap steel case TULAMMO for $5/20 just for plinking but they were real dirty rounds and not very accurate and people are trying to resale those for $25 now.
Besides the equipment is exspensive, and most don't want to take the time to reload

I would rather the prices be higher and a lot harder to get, the bench (high accuracy guns that people use in comp) are ######ed exspensive anyways, my friends .22LR was over 7k just for a bolt action .22 with a heavy bull barrel rifle.
Plus if the reg. market is stupid expesive then the black market would be uber stupid exspensive.

You can add a gun tax and solve the gun problem and budget problem in one shift law. Lol. Too bad the gun lobby would just kill that as well.
Though issue with a lot of these guns is tons of gun owners aren't taking their weapons seriously or handling them in a safe manner. For every gun owner like yourself that locks your stuff away, that keeps the things unloaded and away from children, there are probably ten more than keep them loaded under their pillow or bed. Recipe for accidental killing right there and probably explains a good chunk of the 43x.

Good old John Rocker. Truly a certifiable moron. This Mao/Hitler/Stalin business pops up a lot lately.
First of all, is it even true that Hitler disarmed the populace? Germany became a rather well-armed place before the Holocaust.
Did the Nazis take away guns from Jews in particular? I don't know, but I do know that the 214 thousand Jews in Germany in 1939 (according to Wikipedia - I know) probably wouldn't have been able to stop the Third Reich had they been allowed to hold on to their hunting rifles.
What kind of disarming program went on in China in the early 20th century? I'm sure John Rocker and his likeminded pals are well-versed in Chinese history, but I kinda think there were a lot of rural peasants and maybe not a lot of guns rounded up from the citizenry.
Other questions: did the murdering of those millions in Germany start with a democratically elected leader suggesting universal background checks?
Did Stalin ask for a Comprehensive School Safety Plan at any time during his infamous rule?

I wonder if the people who are complaining about the 23 'laws' actually bothered to read them before automatically assuming Obama is going to take their guns.
The laws aren't that bad. There are lots of good ideas, and some 'no duh' ones included as well.
The AWB coming back might be a good idea, and limiting the magazine capacity to 10 rounds is a 'dream' solution to the problem since changing a magazine takes 2-3 seconds tops for someone with enough practice.
At the end of the day all of these measures won't make much of a difference compared to a healthy economy and a better social net.

Jon Stewart is pretty good tonight - if true: apparently the ATF can't enforce its own laws thanks to some NRA-backed Senators who snuck in laws in other bills. Crazy if indeed true

People should not use history in their argument if they've never actually studied history. It makes you look uneducated and unbalanced.
Some people are made to throw baseballs and yell racial statements at Chinese woman. Some people actually have a brain.

If homes that own guns are 43x more likely to have gun violence incidents, you should focus on responsible gun ownership, and let the natural course of less people owning guns just keep its course.
Banning assault rifles and high capacity mags doesn't do anything to remove the millions already in ownership throughout the US.

It doesn't?
Is your assertion that all the people who own these items would rather break the law than turn the them in?

Who is going to enforce the law? US law enforcement is already stretched thin. Unless you think they're going to spend billions more to round up the millions of assault rifles high capacity mags that are floating around.
I doubt it. Nobody has time for that.
