You guys are surprised? Reason why they're +400 to make the playoffs. I am surprised Vancouver is #2 though. Team isn't as good as the past few seasons but still top 5.

the way some of you talk we might as well not even play the games...Detroit lost their top two d-men and second leading goal scorer but will do better according to TSN

Not really, almost everyone thinks we're in the same category as Columbus and Edmonton.

14th in the conference, or 14th in the league?

I'm looking forward to the Flames proving the TSN guys wrong, and watching them back track on their words.

I didn't laugh because they have us in a realistic range between 12th and 14th. If Kipper gets hurt we are fighting with Columbus for 15th. A few analysts have pointed it out we might as well aim for a lottery pick in a shortened season anyways. Hope for Columbus' sake they don't lose the lottery again or all they are going to have is Dmen.

There are a few x-factors out there lead by Hartley. If he can get more out of Bouwmeester and Cammy has a big bounce back year that is key. If Kipper plays up to standard and Iggymand Tangs continue to have fantastic chemistry that is a boost. Sven, and Backlund are also question marks and could have a positive impact.
I think the Flames will continue to be hard working with the addition of skill things could work out in our favor. The media predictions are fair but hopefully not true

No they put Edmonton in a whole other category. They stick us with Dallas and Anaheim as teams that are absolute wild cards with a low expectation.

Just for reference, here are their predictions from last year with how the team actually finished in parentheses. Not all that accurate, though they did get 12 of the 16 playoff teams:
Projected Eastern Conference Standings
1. Washington (7th)
2. Pittsburgh (2nd)
3. Boston (4th)
4. Philadelphia (3rd)
5. Tampa Bay (10th)
6. Buffalo (9th)
7. NY Rangers (1st)
8. Montreal (15th)
9. New Jersey (5th)
10. Toronto (13th)
11. Carolina (12th)
12. Winnipeg (11th)
13. NY Islanders (14th)
14. Florida (6th)
15. Ottawa (8th)
Projected Western Conference Standings
1. Vancouver (1st)
2. San Jose (7th)
3. Chicago (5th)
4. Detroit (4th)
5. Los Angeles (8th)
6. Anaheim (13th)
7. St. Louis (2nd)
8. Nashville (3rd)
9. Calgary (9th)
10. Dallas (10th)
11. Phoenix (6th)
12. Columbus (15th)
13. Minnesota (12th)
14. Edmonton (14th)
15. Colorado (11th)

The thing with the Flames is if you were to fast forward and see the final standings and see the flames in 14th, you could understand how that could happen. If it showed them winning the division, you could also see how that could happen.
The problem with the flames is that there are way way way too many question marks on the roster. Usually that settles down towards a lower finish that what most fans might expect, but there are enough good piece where they could surprise lots of people.
Pessimistically, I think the Flames could finish 14th, optimistically, I could see them making the playoffs. Just depends on what versions of the key players show up this season.

I think 14th is a bit harsh, any team with Jarome Iginla and Mikka Kipprusoff has the chance of being competitive.. but I understand their logic based on past performances.
People need to stop waiting for this big bust to happen to rebuild, this team is already rebuilding with freshly stocked good prospects, some of which we saw show cased in the WJ's this year.
Just because you are rebuilding doesn't mean you can't try and keep winning in the process.

If I could I would thank this post 1000 times.

We would never be lucky enough to finish 14th. We will track all year, looking like we will, then go on some miracle run, to get us back into that 9-11 spot like we do every. single. year.

I think its pretty accurate, don't see us doing much this year. But I'm okay with it, getting a top 5 pick in a draft year like this will be huge!
