Better speak soon Manti, it's only getting worse
Quote:
The latest comes from Bob Holtzman of ESPN, who reported on College Football Live (via Rotoworld.com) that Te’o's teammates at Notre Dame sensed that something was amiss regarding the claims of a girlfriend who died in September.
“I talked to a former Notre Dame teammate of Te’o's today, who told me that most players always thought that this wasn’t really Te’o's girlfriend,” Holtzman said. “And that they always suspected that this didn’t really add up with the story. [The teammate] also told me that Te’o loved the attention and that even though the story may not have been what it seemed to be, that he was more than happy to play along with it.”
This report suggests that, while the relationship may have begun as a hoax, Te’o played along with it, given that it helped create attention and, ultimately, sympathy

Small lies turning into big ones. Sounds like a bad episode of Three's Company.

No. She could only breathe. One of the miraculous things was when I talked to her and she would hear my voice her breathing would pick up. Like quickly, and then she would start crying. But her breathing would quicken, and she would start crying. So her brother was in the room with the nurse. They were monitoring her. She said, "Who is she on the phone with?" Her boyfriend. She was like, "That's amazing. She doesn't do that with anybody else." So that happened. And then she flatlined and we were losing her.
The day I went home, that was the day they were going to pull it. They were saying their goodbyes and all that. I said, "Babe, I'm never going to say goodbye to you. If you really want to go, she really missed her dad, so I said, "If you want to go, be with dad, go. Just know that I love you very, very much." I had this very positive feeling that everything was going to be OK. I landed in Hawaii. By the time I said my goodbyes. Not my goodbyes, my I love you, I'll see you later, that kind of thing, I jumped on the airplane to go to Hawaii. They were scheduled to pull the plug while I was in the air.
So right when I landed, I was expecting to get a voicemail saying she's gone. So I landed and I had a voicemail from her brother saying, "Brother, call me back right now." So you can imagine what's going through my head. I was like, "What am I going to do? How am I going to take this?'"And so I called him back, the doctor came in and he saw something and he wants to try some treatment on her to see if it works. From there she slowly started to get better. Slowly. Eventually she came out of her coma and she started having memory problems and she couldn't remember because of the accident. That's how much damage she had to her frontal lobe. She had memory problems. I was actually the first person that she talked to. She was breathing, breathing. When I talked to her, I would say, "Babe, do you know who this is?" I knew she knew who it was because her breathing would pick up. I was like, "Relax, chill. Breathe slowly. Breathe slowly." And then, that was when she first started to speak was that conversation. I was like, "Babe, I love you. I love you." Very slightly she said, "I love you.

After reading that interview, he's either the biggest naive idiot in the world or he was in on it.
As I said yesterday after watching the postgame tv interview he did, the fact that he always refers to her as "my girlfriend" rather than her name (except when he's asked specifically about her name) is a huge red flag that he isn't talking about a real person he had a real relationship with.
The exact details about how and when and they met, and whether or not they were ever actually face-to-face with each other, are way too vague; and all the post car-crash details are way too specific.

She was in car crashes and had cancer and he never once was by her side?
Interesting.

Everything I read about this story tells me Te'o is full of BS. Absolutely no way in the world do you not go see the love of your life, the most beautiful person you ever met if they were suffering like that. Two months in the hospital and not one visit? Complete BS.
He may not have been in on it the whole time but he definitely played it forward. He was still talking about his dead girlfriend to the media after he admits to ND that she was fake. Both times right before the Heisman trophy voting. Even one time at the actual event I believe. On some level this kid knew exactly what he was doing.

I like how "she flew to New Zealand to work with kids". Like New Zealand is some third world country in need of people to take care of their impoverished children.

This is why I read Grantland: a discussion between Malcolm Gladwell and Chuck Klosterman regarding Te'o
http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/...rman-manti-teo
Quoting this part from Gladwell because it's amazing (even though it's not central to the discussion):

Does it matter that it's Notre Dame? Of course it does! If a football player from the University of Miami made up an Internet girlfriend, we would just assume that it was a part of their undergraduate major in Online-Dating Studies.

Fortunately for him he was facing the idiocy of Jason Whitlock in the debate so he won in a landslide. It was depressing to watch.

I wonder how far he slides in the draft? Will NFL teams be leary of him thinking that he is mentally unstable?

That'll be interesting. IMO he should slide because of his paly in the NC game more than anything. When faced with elite RB's and and offensive linemen who could get to the second level he looked incredibly average.

It might push him out of the top 10, but I doubt he falls out of the first round. The way he played against Alabama probably hurt him more than this.
EDIT: Damn you, valo!

$20 says he ends up on the Patriots, and probably ends up being a great player on them too. If anything, Belichick is behind this entire thing to get his draft stock to fall so he can get him in the 3rd round. Wouldn't put it past him.
