Was it plowed or sanded/salted? As I understand it, with higher temperatures during the day the snow melts but freezes again overnight, so they do sand certain streets to try and prevent icing. Not sure if that's the case here, but you can definitely call 311 to complain.

I came here to post this. Mine was too - but at 12:45 AM
I understand working at night - but this late in a residential area???
I had been asleep, but noise awoke me and then the dogs went crazy with the metal on pavement scraping.

Definitely plowed. And we are talking a street that sees maybe 10 cars per hour, at the most.

Although I see a lot of residential snow removal as unnecessary, if people have been demanding it, I don't see a problem with doing it during a chinook. It isn't as if all of the snow will disappear entirely, so it may as well be pushed off to the side in preparation for the next snowfall.
I honestly think that people jump up and down over "snow removal" but are actually wanting a better response to winter storms on a very immediate basis to keep the roads driveable. Both are entirely different, but my impression is that the media and a lot of the public don't differentiate the two.

City FAQ on its snow and ice control program. Might answer some questions.
http://www.calgary.ca/Transportation...licy-FAQs.aspx
I'm going to ask some specific questions about the residential street clearing practice and hopefully get back on some of these questions soon.

People are upset that snow removal is happening on their residential streets?
Seriously?

What the heck took the city so long to finish the Sunnyside CTrain Station upgrade? Project was given an April-August time frame at the start and only wrapped up in mid-December. I've written emails to the city and called 311 but no one gets back to me. Completely mismanaged from day 1, not to mention very inconvenient for residents living around there.
Edit: I realize this project was contracted out, but the accountability for it remains with the city.

In my case I'm not upset about the task - it's when it's done at nearly 1 AM.
BTW they don't do snow removal, it's simply plowed.

A few rare times when I lived in the Beltline I saw actual snow removal on 11th avenue.

I guess the snow must be creating issues in garbage/recycling pick up because they didn't do either in my back alley yesterday. And I actually saw the garbage truck going the other direction down the alley; I was surprised when I went out later to pull my bin back and realized it wasn't empty.

They were removing snow on 12th ave in the Beltline last week the night before it snowed. There was hardly any snow in the parking lane and there was about 2 plows, 4 trucks and a guy/truck following behind clearing snow around bike racks and light standards onto the road (which is odd, cause you'd think you'd do that first).

Good
Plowed allows cars to get through roads, snow removal costs more $$$$.

Well, you know at some point, residents have to realize that the city is not Superman. It can't please everyone all the time and work with everyone's sleep schedules. Simply put, they are probably doing your street at that hour because that's when they can. During they daytime they were probably working on the majors streets in the city. So you can either have it done at weird hours once in a while, or not at all.
And yeah, if that wakes up a couple of dogs and light sleepers, well, them's the breaks, welcome to city life. It's full of annoying noises and interruptions, and someone's toes are always being stepped on...this time they were yours. I'm sure a few fire trucks and ambulances have gone by your house in the middle of the night too....do we ask them to stop as well?

That's a good point, I thought most of them didn't speak english but maybe they got their kids to phone in when they came over for Sunday night lasagne.
I just don't really see the benefit, so I hate watching some guy collecting $60/hr cruising down my street in $300,000 of equipment when the street was just as drivable before as after. If anything the old people should be glad people might drive a bit slower when it's snowy.
Now for anyone that parks at the curb they have to step through a giant slush drift to get at their cars.
The only reason it really bothers me, is if money is burned on this kind of uselessness, and no one in charge realizes it, where else is it being dumped down the drain? There are so many cool projects requiring money (new LRT lines, Central Library, the 16th ave/University drive overpass that now has exposed rebar...) and here we sit plowing streets that barely anyone drives on right before a week of warm weather.
Man, when did I get this old and whiny? Get off my lawn

I believe there were changes to the design and scope of the project late in the game - in particular a project called "Bow-to-Bluff", which is a community led effort to improve the quality of the parks and walkways along the LRT corridor. They had some alternative recommendations to the station/plaza design that ended up getting incorportated. In the end, I think the product is good - and the whole corridor along there will eventually be much improved.

I don't suppose you've got any update on the spot just south of there where the triangle warehouse was?

The use of the triangle site has been earmarked for some sort of affordable housing for a little while, but there are no definitive plans yet. There will likely be some new small park space associated with any development there. An important site in the community.
